Puttur, Apr 10: The local subdivision of the police department has of late, been hogging the limelight for all the wrong reasons. Several high profile, barbaric and covert acts of the criminals in the subdivision have remained unresolved, and mysteriously, the policemen have not been able to make any headway either, in these cases.

It has been two months since valuables worth lacs of rupees were stolen from the home of MP, D V Sadanand Gowda, in the town. Neither have the thieves been traced, nor have the valuables been recovered. The policemen have remained clueless about this theft so far.

A man named Tingaladi Umesh Rai, who used to live in the town, within the earshot of Gowda’s residence, went missing two weeks back. After a protracted search, the policemen found that the car and its key, which had been found abandoned at Badiyadka, had been taken into possession by the Badiyadka policemen in Kasargod district. On Friday April 9, the policemen brought this Maruti Alto car to town. Rai, who had left home on March 26 to meet his brother, Jayaraj Rai, in Eshwaramangala, has not been seen since then. Neither has his body been recovered, nor could he be contacted over mobile phone, which gives switched off signal.

A mother and child duo was hacked to death in broad daylight at Addole in the taluk about 18 months ago. The culprit then walked away from the scene and took a bus. But, so far, no more details are available with the policemen.

Even Sadanand Gowda, an influential politician, who initially followed up the theft case with the policemen actively, saying that the theft in the house of a top politician from the state, particularly considering that the home minister hails from the coast, gives a wrong signal to the people.  Of late, he has stopped talking about the incident, realizing its futility.

Several other thefts are also taking place in the taluk and the district, giving the indication that a huge racket is working behind them. Although the policemen keep claiming to have busted inter-state gangs of thieves often, there has been no let up in the  number of thefts in the district.
