Bengaluru, Oct 3 (IANS): The Bengaluru police on Saturday arrested a notorious rowdy-sheeter Syed Hanif after a brief shootout in which he was hit on the knee after he had attacked two policemen. He was on the run after throwing boiling edible oil on a woman vendor.

The arrest was reported a day after Bengaluru Police Commissioner Kamal Panth announced that there would be "zero tolerance" for rowdyism.

Hanif, 22, was travelling on a bike when Sampigehalli police signalled him to stop on the Bengaluru main road in the wee hours. He tried to escape, but police chased him and caught up with him. The rowdy slashed a Constable's arm with a dagger during the scuffle.

Inspector Mallikarjunaiah fired in the air to warn Hanif but he stabbed another Constable, following which Mallikarjunaiah shot him in his left knee to immobilise him.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East) CK Baba said Hanif, a resident of Amarjyoti Layout, was notorious for picking up fights with small shopkeepers and roadside vendors. "Kicking a pan full of boiling oil on to a woman snack-seller is one such case. The injured woman is critical and is in an ICU," he added.

"On September 30, Meghala was selling 'pakodas' when Hanif asked her for a pack of cigarettes, which she handed over. When she asked for money, Hanif kicked an oil pan, splashing boiling oil on her and leaving her scalded. He also attacked a passerby the same day in front of a liquor shop with a beer bottle, resulting in head injuries to the man," police said.

Police said Hanif was wanted in seven cases in Sampigehalli police jurisdiction and another in HAL police limits.
