Udupi, Apr 21: National bird peacock was crushed under the wheels of speeding vehicle on NH 17 at Mulur, near here on Tuesday April 20 night. The personnel from forest department arrived to retrieve the dead peacock and buried as prescribed in the Wilde Life Act.

The wild animals including birds are venturing into plantations and farmlands, in search of food and pastures, especially in the surrounding areas of Kaup – Padubidri, on either side of NH 17.  As the deforestation has been rampant in the district to facilitate setting up heavy industries, it has put severe strain on the wild animals and birds to get their food for sustenance.

The wild animals and peacocks are being sighted throughout the day and night in the neighbouring villages that lies close to forest and thus several peacocks have died run over by the motorists when attempting to cross the NH.

From 1956 to 1971 I lived in Uliyargoli Village Kaup and travelled all most all areas between Udupi and Mulki and had not seen one Peacock then venthough it was thick jungle, scant population in this region. Recently when i visited the same palce i could see many Peacocks. How come this development in spite of having unprecedentd growth in population, houses, businesses and so on. It is probably beacuse majority of the land is not cultivated leading to growth of bushes everywhere making good palce for these birds to hatch and grow. My friends, it is not deforestation but the local people have given up the land to these pretty birds to play around....

This what happens when habitats are encroached upon. It is only a sample of greater things to come as a result of the destrution of the coastal greenery making way for Industry and promoting desertification...
Can`t we find more suitable places for industries in barren hills than destroy the nature and cause suffering to man and animals and nature like this??
