Puttur: Fake vehicle insurance policies - One confesses, more involvements likely

Puttur, Oct 16: On the basis of complaint about fake vehicle insurance policies being used by making use of codes of authorised agencies, the town police questioned a middleman involved with regional transport office work named Ashfaq and he reportedly confessed to the wrongdoing.

Abdul Khader had sold his auto rickshaw to a person named Jaleel. On October 12, Jaleel filed an application in the insurance company seeking to transfer the policy in his name. At that time, the insurance company found out the mischief. The policy Ashfaq issued to Khader by using the agency code of the authorised company was fake but Khader was not aware that the policy was fake. When the police contacted Khader, he informed them that he had got the insurance done through Ashfaq.

The regional transport officials check insurance policy copies when application for vehicle ownership transfer is filed. The officials approve the transfer by just checking the vehicle details mentioned in the policy documents without verifying the genuineness. It is learnt that the people in possession of smartphones can verify the genuineness of the policy by scanning the same, but neither the traffic police nor regional transport officials are doing this check, it is learnt. There are certain insurance companies which offer insurance cover at cheaper rates but when there is a claim, the policyholder finds out that several clauses are not covered and hence he cannot claim insurance money for a number of items.

Jamburaj, police sub-inspector here, said that a person was questioned on the basis of a complaint filed by an insurance agency, and he agreed to have issued two fake insurance policies. He has been asked to produce authorised company policy within two days, he added.
