Mangaluru, Nov 2: The policemen of Bajpe station, here, have succeeded in arresting a woman who allegedly cheated jewellers with the help of fake documents and signatures. She has been identified as Farida Begum.

The arrest was made on the basis of a complaint filed on September 28 by S Anand Achary at Bajpe police station. Achary had accused the woman of buying gold ornaments worth Rs 7.3 lac from a jewellery store at Bajpe Kaikamba in phases by presenting fake documents and signing cheques which were returned unpaid later.

A complaint about issuing fake cheques and buying gold ornaments valued at about Rs 30 lac from a jewellery store within the limits of Moodbidri police station also has been registered against the woman. In this case, Prabhakar Achary reportedly was duped.

Farida Begum is from Mura House, Kuppepadavu. After the Bajpe police took her into custody and subjected her to intensive interrogation, gold ornaments worth Rs 12 lac were taken into possession from her. The other accused in the case, her husband, Rameez Raza from Udupi, her father, Latif Ulal, and her young brother, Ahdul Razack Kuppepadavu, and her maternal aunt, Mumtaz, are absconding, The police are trying to catch hold of them.

The operation was conducted by police sub-inspectors, Rama Poojary, Raghavendra Naik and Kamala under the leadership of the assistant commissioner of police, Belliappa and Bajpe police inspector, K R Naik, as per the directions of the city police commissioner, Vikash Kumar, deputy commissioners of police, Arunangshu Gri and Vinay A Gaonkar.
