GAIL's Mangaluru-Kochi pipeline project complete

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Nov 18: The pending portion of the much-awaited gas pipeline of Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL) between Kochi and Mangaluru at Chandragiri has been completed. Within a few days, gas supply to the city will begin. At most, gas supply might begin in a month.

Pipeline commissioning work till Kannur has been completed and gas as been supplied till then. The work of laying 540-metre underground pipeline across River Chandragiri in Kasargod district, which was the toughest portion of the project, was completed on Saturday after several delays. Only minor works like pipe welding are pending and it will take only a couple of days to complete. Gas supply testing will take place. If everything goes on as planned, the gas will reach the city in another month.

Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilisers Ltd and some other companies have been waiting for years after adjusting their systems to the natural gas. They hope to be able to function economically once the gas supply begins.

Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that Kochi-Mangaluru pipeline commissioning will take place during December and within a week thereafter, industries in Mangaluru will get natural gas.

The 444 km-long pipeline costing Rs 2,915 crore had begun in 2009. Because of land acquisition delays, the progress was sluggish, and the cost escalated to Rs 5,750 crore. Gas supply had begun till Kuttanadu, 90 km to the north of Kochi, in 2019. Thereafter, gas is being supplied till Kannur now. The GAIL officials expect demand for gas in Mangaluru to be around 2.5 million cubic metres. After the pipeline is dedicated to the world, gas will be supplied continuously from the Petronet company in Kochi. This gas will be supplied to homes and connections will be given to petrol pumps for use in vehicles.

Across Chandragiri river, there was a problem with laying the 24-inch pipeline below the river. Because of incessant problems, a six-inch pipe has been laid there now. It will be replaced with 24-inch one after the commissioning, the officials said.

Murugesh P executive director, GAIL, said that gas is expected to be pumped to Mangaluru within a few days from now.

They could have very well built a storage terminal in Mangalore on the same budget instead of going round & round the garden?

It is to benefit Kerala. Kerala govt can earn money by distributing gas to karnatka. So..No doubt terminal could have built in Mangalore itself

Houses in the city are connected to GAIL Gas meters but the pipeline work doesn't appear to have started anywhere in the surrounding areas.

As such, this project is for domestic purpose doesn't seem to be industrial.

1st thing - the pipeline will be used to transport the natural gas that is imported to Kochi. The natural gas will be imported in ships in liquified state at minus 160°C temperature. It requires a special storage terminal which is installed in Kochi by Petronet LNG, commissioned in 2013. Since then the terminal is very much under utilized as there is no pipe line available to distribute imported gas. The decision to install the terminal at Kochi may be a political decision, but I dont have any comments on that. The terminal could have been built at Mangalore also.

2nd., The 444 km pipe line work tenders were issued 2009 onwards were all cancelled in 2013.-14 There was no progress, hardly 5 km line was laid till 2013. Even there was a situation where GAIL decided to remove these pipe lines and cancel the job. There were issues of right of use of land and heavy politics was played. Till 2011-2016, INC lead UDF was governing Kerala.

In 2015, PMO, Petroleum Ministry again activated this project and all new tenders were issued and information pertaining to the tenders are available in internet. The increased budget (almost 2.5 times) was sanctioned, and work started again. The new Kerala LDF Govt also extended its support. the Line was almost completed in 2019 May when Netravati and Chandragiri river crossing became hurdle. I only say, these critical river crossing jobs could have been completed earlier.
Now, gas supply to Mangalore seems to be reality after 8 years of wait. We must give credit to PM of India and CM of Kerala.
A part of pipe line connecting this line from Kottanad in kerala to Bangalore is still pending. It has to pass through Tamilnadu. Bangalore is already connected to Gas Grid from another side. Connection of this southern line with Bangalore will connect southern part gas grid with northern part of gas grid.

Please don't call people "Anda Bhakth" without knowing the facts.

Thank god this project is nearing completion. But distribution to the city i think will take more time. They will supply first to Industries then later City. Exactly last Nov i joined Yogmaya that was one agency that got contract for marketing Gail Gas. Myself and others are still waiting for payments from this company as we already have submitted all customer forms to the managers of the company. Sad to say Gail Gas Mangalore is sitting quiet about this.

why they laid 6" pipeline earlier and replacing it now with 24" pipeline? is the demand increased or is it a design mistake? need clarity.. 11years to commission 444km long pipeline with 100% price escalation. As Nitin Gadkari said recently to NHAI, those involved in delaying this job should also be named & shamed.

    P Shetty,
Under water conditions in river/sea bed is unpredictable and there will be always chances of failure unless detailed geophysical/geotechnical survey is done. 6" Pipeline is temporarily laid across Chandragiri river and " ...It will be replaced with 24-inch one after the commissioning" as the official said.

before laying subsea pipelines, complete study will be carried out looking historical data of water levels, bottom water current and sea/river bed profile. Is this line laid on riverbed or in a trench??

The task installing pipes across river chandragiri was a nightmare for them. Because the river is not flowing linear and has different dept in different places. So they need a permanent solution which takes more time. So for temporary basis they made less diameter pipes now and same time the other work is in progress. Since the work started in 2009, they don't want to delay it further due to this. And communist party govt is going to complete their 5 years now. So after the election it may delay again. When central approved this in 2009, congress was ruling party in Kerala. But they couldn't do anything, especially due to the protest from opposition (CPM). Later same CPM initiated the work and completed. The delay was mainly bcz f central & State Congress govt, as they were least interested in this. Now it got completed bcz f Modi only, he is the man who pressurised Kerala CM to finish with high priority. They have a plan to supply gas for domestic use as well as for vehicles. Those pipe installations initiated in our side.
The program started in 2009 when INC was in power. That time Kerala was ruling by
