Doha: Bus Confined Four-year-old Girl Dies of Asphyxiation

Doha, May 18 (Gulf Times): A four-and-a-half-year-old Indian kindergarten pupil Sarah Gazdhar died on Monday May 17 purportedly of heat and asphyxiation after she had failed to disembark from the bus when it reached her school. She was left in the vehicle for over four hours.

At least two such deaths have been reported in other GCC states in the last two years. However, according to information available, this is the first time an incident such as this has occurred in a school in Qatar.

Operating a school bus without an attendant is an offence, inquiries made with transport departments at some schools found. A transport manager at another school, managing more than 75 buses apart from hiring buses from outside for ferrying their students, said no driver was allowed to take the bus out of the campus without an attendant on board at his institution.

“If an attendant takes leave owing to some emergency, we ensure that a substitute takes is provided who would meet the requirements of those boarding the bus,” he said.

“Once or twice, we were forced to depute other staffers to do the duties as the attendants concerned were unable to work due to sudden indisposition,” said another manager.

“Even if it is a bus operated on contract, the school ensures that an attendant accompanies the children on board,” he said.

The official said that on hearing (yesterday’s) tragic news, his school management summoned a meeting of the transport staffers to advise them of the necessary precautions to be taken to avoid such tragedies.

So this is the responsiblity of the transport manager to advise all his driver and attendent to check the bus each and every time,in my relation before it happend in Kuwait also the small baby become the victim. Indeed very sad.... and very irresponsible behaviour on the part of the bus attendants. I agree with some of the comments that teachers should call the parents to check when their children do not come to school. But inspite of such incidents which has happened in Abu Dhabi, still the teachers or the school does not call the parents. SAFETY should be a PRIORITY when dealing with children - no excuses. The bus attendants & drivers need to be educated on this.

Hope education ministry will wake up now and adapt some stringent laws against the schools rather permitting them to increase the fees & make more money.
The attendent in the bus should count the children while boarding & make sure they reach to the class safely. After that the responsibility of the teacher to make sure all the children are in the class.Any absentism should be informed to the parents if she donot have information from the parents about the child being absent. There should be some value for human being no use of taking action now the life is gone. The parents will not get their child back even they hang the driver or attendant.

My deepest condolences to little angel Sara's family and may her soul rest in peace. Many of us have deeply touched by this incident and it is very difficult to believe and accept.

As one of the local news paper published the report of the incident by saying that teacher used to help this child to get down from the bus. That means there was no attender in this bus at all!!!..Then how come from these many days/months this bus was operating without attender? Why the parents of all the children who were using this bus have not reported to school? If they reported also why there was no immediate reaction from the school authority? This is clearly a negligence case from driver as well as from the transport authority from school. Ultimately the big and never forgiven loss is for parents and they have to face it throughout their life. Imagine how and what might this little girl must have gone through when she woke up from her sleep and before leaving this world. Oh! Allah, why you have not saved this innocent and helpless child when she was fighting against life and death? One cannot sit just like that closing this incident saying that this is an accident. School should be closed down forever and the driver along with the transport in-charge should be punished.

What a tragedy. Not only the school bus driver responsible for negligence, even class teacher didn’t bother to call the parents to know why child is absent. Parents could have come immediately saying they sent the child to school & what went wrong.

That would have alerted a search. My God I can’t imagine parents condition now. I'm also a parent & I get so panicked when my kids are late.

How anybody can trust the school transport system. This is absolute negligence. Everyone involved should be punished for carelessness. However that will not bring back our Angel Sarah.   May her soul rest in peace & May Almighty God give strength to her dear family to bear this great loss.

Why cant we all raise our voice and resolve to boycott such schools so that all schools learn that they will go out of business if they do not have full security precautions. I appreciate if readers could really do this through this site.

Just one more thing - All children are angels and innocent and we cannot differentiate looking at the picture of the child. At least this is one occasion where we cannot have double standards, I hope the readers who have commented at the picture agree.

They found his scaleton only when school re opend after holidyas, you can immagin how miseries and agony the boy must have gone through without food and water for many days, for your information very next week same teacher commited suicide.
2)Another boy was not feeling well he has stomach pain and his teacher told him to sleep in a last bench and that day also last day before anual leave. All left the school when last period over and bell rang but biy was in deep sleep.
All forgotton about the boy even the teacher. His family searching every were but everything in vain. The boy wrote everything in a Class Black board,he started eat papers from the books, chalks, duster pieces, even his urin everything hehe dtailed wrote in a black board. but he could not come out since school was locked in remote vollage.
When school reopened they also found his sclaton but but no one was funished.

I recall a similar incident happened in Saudi Arabia a few years ago when one of the children that was traveling in a school-bus fell asleep and the driver without bothering to check the bus for any children, locked the door and left it till afternoon. Miraculously the child survived despite being in the bus till afternoon in that furnace-like scorching heat but was dehydrated and very shocked. The boy was so scared that he did not want to travel in the bus anymore.

Because of the high temperature in the Gulf region the vehicles get extremely hot when left unattended and before driving them, one has to run A/C for a few minutes to bring down the temperature to a normal level. In this particular case, one can imagine what the child went through before succumbing to death.

The driver should be held responsible for his irresponsible and negligence act and should be given an exemplary punishment. May the Almighty give courage to the bereaved family to sustain this great loss.

It is extremely agonizing to learn of Sarah's unprecedented and tragic death. I can visualize the pain and suffering the kid must have gone through gasping for breath. Both the bus driver and the school management are equally responsible for this cruel negligence. Stringent punishment must be given to the driver if he is found guilty. If the attendant was absent, adequate measures should have been taken by the school to substitute her as the children on the bus were too small to take care of themselves. This incident will never be forgotten for the rest of our lives and should serve as a wake up call to all those parents who bank upon school transport system to take care of their little ones. My heart goes out to the parents and her brother, and offer my sympathies and sincere condolences. Let us pray that God give strength and fortitude to the parents to bear this tragic loss.

Heartfelt condolences to Sarah's family. May her soul rest in peace. Hard to digest this tragedy. I see my daughter in this girl. May God give the strength to bear this great loss to her family to accept the fact. School should be boycotted and should give the justice to the parents by punishing the concerned responsible person in charge, so that it will be lesson to other schools too.
Here in Doha many schools which are functioning in porta cabins, class rooms are so tiny and congested, no ventilation, air condition in the buses/ class rooms are not functioning properly. As the many buses are hired on rental basis, the drivers and attenders they do not have uniform nor they have trained properly to handle the kids especially KG - grade 3 children, buses they do not have the school name or bus numbers on the buses. There is no proper grounds or play area for kids.

Why the education authority in Doha not taking any proper measurements before the school is ready to function? why they are giving permission to run the schools in prota cabins? why children are kept deprived for their basic things when we the parents paying such a huge money as fees. Above all, now all the school should take responsibility when the child have not reported to school or parents should inform the driver or school authority about absence. So that one can avoid such disaster where parents leave their loved one in the hands of someone thinking that they will be taken enough care!!

The court should order that the person responsible must handover his child to the parents of victims. Then only the offenders shall feel the pain of loss and seperation.

These types of accidents are the result of carelessness and can surely be avoided. When coming to human lives, carelessness is an unpardonable offence. May her soul rest in peace and may the parents of little angel be blessed with another girl child.

    Dear all

Such cases are known even in Japan, USA and many other developed countries. Even one such a rare case in a million count is un-forgetful and un-forgivable.

I pity that one innocent child is lost, May Sarah's soul rest in peace.

Please take care to and fetch the child yourself when the school is nearby. Dont depend on the school-bus though money is not a criteria to many unless it is a last resort. Best is, parents/guardians take turn to and fetch the child from the nursery/child-care.

Same holds good in Mangalore when people depend heavily on rickshaws even though the school are at walking distance. These rickshaws with overloaded children are vulnerable for severe road accidents.

Once the child has grown big, they know to draw public attention when trapped inside the bus.
