Air India Crew, Engineers on Flash Strike

Air India crew, engineers on flash strike

Mumbai/New Delhi, May 25 (IANS) Over 15,000 crew members and maintenance engineers of Air India went on a flash strike all over India Tuesday, hitting the carrier's operations, according to airport sources.

An Air India official, however, claimed flight operations were "normal and the management has no information of the strike".

Airport sources said Air India crew members and maintenance engineers went on strike for their various demands, including delays in payment of salaries.

Union sources said that on account of the sudden agitation, AI operations at most airports across the country had been severely hit and several flights were delayed.

"There were 4-5 issues for the strike, and the latest was a gag order issued by the management. There are 12,000 engineers and crew of Air India with us and operations are severely affected," said Anand Prakash, general secretary of Air Corporation Employees Union (ACEU).

Airport sources in New Delhi said that the employees started gathering at the Palam airport at around 1.30 p.m. as the shifts start changing from 2 p.m.

"Their aim was to gather more people. Among the issues that has forced employees to go on strike were non-payment of salaries and controversy on serving liquor on board," said a protesting employee.

The national carrier had earlier ordered 50 percent cut in the productivity-linked incentives (PLI) to save about Rs.700 crore. PLIs currently account for 30 percent to 50 percent of Air India employees' wages. PLIs have not been paid since August.

Air India officials, however, claim that operations are not affected by the strike.

"They have just now gone on strike and as of now all flights are on time. We have to wait and see whether the strike will affect the operations. It is a time of crisis and the employees should cooperate with the management," an airline spokesperson said.

Like most airlines in the world, starting from western countries Airlines operate in the red(loss). And Air India, in the recent past is no exception. Recently, the Indian government pumped so much tax payers money into AirIndia to keep operating.

Paying salaries is quite important, then again like major companies keep restructuring and employees sometimes are asked to cooperate in terms of wage cocessions. Perhaps Air India has real problems in terms of cash flow. This will affect the airline in a significant way from maintenance to daily operations. Given the continuing problems of Air India perhaps the managememnt has to be looked at, and if required changes in management should be made.  Should this national carrier be saved, perhaps, yes.

It is very shameful that our national carrier Air India is unable to pay salaries and incentives in time. Continuous mismanagement by useless politicians of all parties has brought Air India to this sorry state. It is high time for Air India to be privatized so that it can continue to fly and be competitive.

Giving PLIs to Air-India workers is baseless. In India 3 employees work for 1 employee in Europe. Even then these employees do work properly. They know they cannot be hired as they are protec ted by the unions. It is high time to close the airline and come out with a new airline with complete new work-force.

This is a gone-case airline. No miracle of any sort can turn it around. God alone knows how much more should the general public bear this rot? Is there no limit for this? It's frustrating to read the same old story again and again. The only solution - dismiss instantly all the trouble creators, round them up and throw them behind the cellulars (jail). Let them languish there and rot up. Impose a stringent rule like POTA. Ban all the trade unions like Bharatiya Kamgar Sena, Shiv Sena etc who are directly responsible for this goofup and only waiting for their kick-backs. And finally, let the owners (private bodies) amalgamate this airline with some interested parties seriously wanting to take over this airline. I bet, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will curse himself for being an interpretor in sanctioning a turnaround package of Rs. 5,000 crores to restructure this airlines - will not be of any use since it is already a 'sick' airlines, does not even have its own working capital. Also no body will come forward (not even the BIFR) to help in the turn-around. Nobody should sympathise with the employees. Let them fend for themselves. They have had enough of honey-mooning. The whole country has had enough of this nuisance. The entire world is making a mockery of us. Still I bet no one will listen.

I do not wish to comment whether the approach is rational or not. However - how can people survive unless they are paid their salaries. Under The Human Rights concepts non-payment of salaries and wages is grave default and unless the dues are cleared - management cannot justify their action.
