Mangalore : No Decrease in Passenger Traffic - Air India

MANGALORE, May 26 (The Hindu): The plane crash here on Saturday does not seem to have created much fear among air passengers, especially those travelling on the Mangalore-Dubai sector, daily.

According to the information available at the Air India office here, 123 passengers flew from Mangalore to Dubai and 99 passengers arrived from there on the very next day (Sunday) of the crash.

An Air India official said that 139 passengers flew to Dubai on Monday and 110 passengers arrived from there on that day. On Tuesday, 103 passengers arrived here from Dubai. The daily flight was scheduled late in the evening on Tuesday.

Load

The usual passenger-plus-crew load allowed on this flight ranges from 160 to 185, depending on the weight of the baggage.

“People need to travel, irrespective of such accidents,” Sunil Kishen, Executive Director, Southern Region of Air India, Chennai.

Kishen said that Saturday's incident had not brought down the passenger-traffic to destinations such as Muscat, Doha, Kuwait, Bahrain and Abu Dhabi.

Counselling

He said that Air India had made arrangements to counsel its crew members to “get over from the initial distraught, if any” following Saturday's incident, through professional counsellors.

Kishen said that some crew members like bachelors, lived together and others lived like friends. “Death of colleagues naturally disturbs them. We want to provide moral support to them.”

Help desk

The official said that the Air India had set up help desks at six places — Mangalore, Kozhikode, Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi and Dubai — to assist next-of-kin of the victims in claiming compensation.

An Air India spokesperson said that the crash details had been uploaded on its website “airindiaexpress.in.”

He said that Air India would bear the hospital expenses of those injured in the crash.

In Mangalore city office of the Air India, 30 members would assist the people for claiming the compensation, he added.

The reason why other airlines are not operating to Mangalore (IXE) is might be because it does not have sufficient runway length as per the international standard. And the airport authority and air India is deliberately not extending the runway length, so that no other international carriers will come forward to operate and air India can continue the monopoly and the exploitation of the passengers of this sector.

The passenger load did not changed because all passengers booked Air India express by paying in advance. The only airline available from Gulf destination. If there was an alternate airline the seen would have been different.Passengers are not travelling with happy mind or with outstanding service of Air India express since no choice for them. I request all NRI Mangaloreans living in gulf to put pressure on central Government to open the Mangalore destination open for all airlines. As quoted by avaition minister during the inaguration of new terminal that the current runway need to be extended to 9000 feet to meet international standard and will be extended soon. I really feel that why this runway not constructed to international standard while built recently? The repeatation of extention will not cost more to the government? Very poor planning by DGCA further more our intelligent leaders are not understtod the requirements. All gulf residents should fight for getting private or any other airlines directly from gulf destinations to Mangalore.

Death for all of us is planned by God and not manmade. And we as humanbeings should be prepared and ready for it. If death for one is destined, it will even if you sit in closed doors. We only don't hear of AI crash, there are other flights too that have crashed and people lost their near and dear ones. So please stop criticizing our national carrier.

    Gregory,

I don't think its a matter of pity because AIE is the only airline from Mangalore that gives direct link to UAE and passengers who have scheduled their leave/return cannot postpone it as they will loose the fare already paid and also they must report to duty on scheduled date.

AIE is taking total advantage of people's situation (1) by fixing high prices (2) by dominating the route / not allowing any other airline to have operated on that sector.

Sunil Kishen is boasting of Air India Express since people do not have an alternate mode of air travel directly from Mangalore to any of the Gulf Region. The day is not far away when more international airlines operate from Mangalore and perhaps only Sunil Kishen and his staff of AIE fly by AIE. Let's all wait till then for his next comments.Sunil Kishen hold on till then.

Mr.Kishen, is there any option for the Dubai Mangaloreans. Because the runway is only 8000mt/feet not 9000mt/ft which is the requirement for International Airport. This is the pressure tactic of AI to be the monopoly over Mangalore Airport. Papa Kudlada NRI naklena thigale daba daba panu land adh flight rd pidadi bathinetta, Undu Enklena HaneBaraha

This apparently is a well known fact. people also should have a choice about which Airline they fly with. For the safety of all concerned, How about Air India relinquishes its monopoly on international flights to Mangalore?.

I will not stop flying an airline for the fear of its crashing or past accident records. Death will come no matter you opt to walk instead of using a ceratain mechanism to cover the distance.

However, Mangalore-Dubai is one sector that brought so much revenue to Air India, that it could cover its existing losses to certain extent.

I hope at-least now Air India understands this and alleviates Gulf based Mangaloreans' financial burden by reducing the fares. Many of those who travel on this route are poor labour class people earning meager salary and living in too poor conditions. It is a low budget operation just for name sake. For one landing/take-off the charges are too high compared to flights via Mumbai or Bangalore.
