Mangaluru, Dec 12: Mention of marriage brings before our eyes heaps of plastic bottles, glasses, juice glasses, spoons, and ice cream cups etc which contribute to environment pollution. For every marriage functioning lasting a few hours, huge heaps of plastic waste get added to the environment around us.

A couple showed how all this can be avoided. In their marriage performed in the city. No plastic that cannot be recycled was used. At the marriage held at Lord Suryanarayana temple here on Thursday. Hariprasad and Vinayashree became the man and the wife at a function that did not make people feel guilty about polluting the environment.

In place of plastic items, the couple created awareness about being environment-friendly, by using plates and spoons made of areca sheets, earthen glasses etc. For serving lassi, the earthen cups were used while paper glasses were used for serving buttermilk. Steel glasses were used to serve water, while areca plates and spoons were used to serve sweets and ice cream. As a result, plastic waste generated at this wedding was nil.

The family says that the earthen glasses (kulhad) which is widely used in north India, have provided a way to stop using plastic. It also brings income to the potters. By using areca plates, the areca growers get some encouragement. The guests at the marriage admired the way in which environment was preserved and appreciated the concerned for sparing a thought for such a worthy cause.

Vikram, brother of the bride, says that they had decided in advance against using plastic at the marriage and collected environment-friendly things in advance. He revealed that they could get the kulhads from the Potters Cooperative Society, Perdoor.
