Bengaluru, Dec 16: A public interest litigation (PIL) filed in the state high court has questioned the decision of Mysore Bar Association against representing a student in the court. The student in question, Nalini Balakumar, was arrested for her alleged act of holding aloft the 'Free Kashmir' banner during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act and National Register of Citizens Act protests.

The Mysore Bar Association had reportedly passed a resolution asking its members not to argue the case on behalf of the said student in the court. Tumakuru-based lawyer, L Ramesh Nayak, has filed this PIL. After hearing the plea, a division bench of the high court led by Chief Justice A S Oka ordered service of notices to Karnataka State Bar Council and Mysore district Bar Association, asking them to file objections if any, before adjourning hearing.

Nayak has argued that passing of a resolution against the council members representing an accused in the court is against the directions of the Supreme Court, the bench observed and asked Mysore Bar Association to provide a copy of such a resolution if passed, to the court. It adjourned hearing in the PIL to January 19.
