Mangalore, Jun 3: The district labour department and the police raided a house near Jyothi, behind Hotel Maharaja, and found two victims of child labour.

The children named Shivu Kumar and Siddique were in the employ of Shaukath who managed escaped from the residence when the authorities reached there.

Shivu Kumar, a 11-year-old boy from Hosangadi Manjeshwar, said that Shaukath got him from his parents who were working in his fields after the boy completed his third standard.

Shaukath’s wife Fathima told the boy’s father to send him to work at her residence and the father did as told. The boy used to clean the floor, wash utensils, escort Shaukath’s son to school, and work in Shaukath’s factory also.

Siddique, a 14-year-old-girl from Chikmagalore, was also brought by Fathima to work in the house. She said that she did all the kitchen work as well as cleaning the toilet of the house.

Both the children had been working in the house since three years like ‘child prisoners,’ before the raid conducted by child labour inspector Manohar, district labour officer 1 Nagesh DG, and district labour officer 2 Gopal. Usha, Netravathi, and Shamba are the three constables who assisted in the raid.

Gopal, speaking to press persons, said that the Judicial Magistrate Court II will elicit Rs 20,000 from the employer as compensation for the children.

The children will be admitted to Sethu Bandhu School, Mangalore, till the parents get them admitted to a public school.

We can comment and counter comment but the reality is that we all don't know the actual situation of those parents and children. Those children are proud to help their poor and miserable parents and to earn some extra bucks without feeling bad or humiliated. Of coarse, in every case there are exceptions like those child labour too want to flaunt and enjoy little liberty and luxury that the employers children enjoy. In extreme cases, the parents force the children to work at an unfavorable work condition with the greed of earning extra bucks by hook or crook, which is wrong.

Thanks to Daiji for highlighting the child labour.
We as parents should think of others children before getting them into child labour. And if the parents are living on income from child labour they should be punished and send the children to the Ashrams/orphanages.We see parents make their children beg on the roads and with their alms parents consume liquor. These children also should be sent to the orphan's house. When the govt is conducting census ,servants also should be part of it to take further action.

Child labour is evil by all standards. Its prevention cannot be merely curbed by law enforcement. Its cause is rooted in poverty and till poverty exist child labour will persist.

'Authorities rescue child labourers from city residence'....May I ask the authorities to visit village Restaurants & Beer Bars ? There prevails the actual child labor !! Children as small as 9 years are employed to clean floors, tables, toilets who have no proper clothing, no hygiene, no proper rest nor proper place to rest. These authorities have rescued two children and the news shows as if the entire child labor is eradicated.

There are so many laws that are openly ignored and the authorities are showing blind eyes to the offenders. Some of the examples are child-marriages, child-labors, prostitutions etc. Don't make the mockery of these laws instead modify them to accommodate the realities with some punch lines.

This is the system we have in India. We won't worry about the other childern's prosparity and education. We don't even think what goes into their mind that while they see in that same house going school, eating good food with parents, dressing well. One cannot imagine the parents of the kids ask this boy to escort their children to school.

We take a stray case of one family and highlight it as if nowhere else child labour is prevalent. It is rampant all over India and those poor families survive on their earnings. It is upto those poor parents/guardians not to allow their ward to work in others homes/factories and if the child as well as the parent of the child are happy about it then it is denial of earning by one of the member of those poor families.

The Govt should bring some modification to our child-labour law such as: a) the employer should report at the labour office about employing an under-aged child with the concern of the child as well as parent, b) the employer should sent the child to school at their convenience, c) the work load should be of permissible limit, d) the child should be treated with dignity, e) the child should be medically checked every six months at the children’s ward of Govt hospital and finally f) the labour officers should give surprise visit to such residences/factories, take the child-labour into confidence and ask them whether they have any genuine grievances about their work or their employer. If they find any cruelty by the employer then action should be taken.

This is just another money making gimmick. Stop degrading the under-aged child-labour as well as humiliating the family who help these children at the insistence of their parents for extra earning to feed the large family including aged and diseased grand-parents in their backward village.

There is no point in just cursing somebody who keep children (with or without remuneration) with an intention to get works done. I hate guys who rob children right for education, entertainment and opportunity to cope with the society to get become a “CULTURED HUMAN BEING”. I strongly oppose “HUMAN ANIMALS” who acting like machine to produce children without bothering eligibility to fulfill children rights, just producing children on blind religious, cast and community spirits by neglecting social responsibilities. Society need to punish people like above which will create positive impact towards developing cultured and educated society where children would considered as social asset and pillars to develop productive society in future. I am sure, its worthless to expect action from concerned “AUTHORITIES”, instead we need to be aggressive and initiate action along with authorities to clean anti-society beliefs and functionalities. DEAR PARENTS, please provide justice to yourself by preserving your own children.

People are reacting as if for the first time we have come across child labour.

It is common when you go to any roadside restaurant the cleaners are all children and we patronise them by giving business. On the streets anywhere we find children begging, rag picking etc, we never saw anybody raiding there.

Inspite of continuous awareness about the rights of children, it is sad to hear the news of the incidents in which rights of children are violated. Shame on those wealthy, greedy and insensitive people who by making these innocent children to work at their houses or factories kill thier most valuable childhood. Stringent action should be taken on such people so that other people who think on the same line will have a fear to do so. Congratulations to the authorities for this noble and great task. Let us all irrespective of caste or religion or status join together to eradicate the child labour and to restore the respect and dignity to that lovely, innocent, explorable childhood.

It is an appreciable start from the department. We may not be able to take a count of all children who are employed in Mangalore alone. It is an open secret that we have child labour and has been going on for years. Few hotels and houses and few work places, child labour still exists and some how it has been not noticed. This is for sure a tip of the iceburg. Let the authorities go deeper in to this and create an awareness among public. Fine / compensation of Rs.20,000/- is an easy thing to pay off n hush off the case to go scotfree. Authorities, should be generous to impose punishment on the erring citizens, so that others are careful. Great Job by the authorities, please keep up this good work and continue to rescue innocent children. Thank you daiji for bringing this to light.
