361 MoUs signed at GIM; Rs 4 Lac cr investment mopped up

BANGALORE, JUN 4: As the curtains came down on the Global Investors’ Meet, Karnataka notched up a record investment of Rs 4 Lac crore with the signing of 361 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in a wide and diverse range of sectors from aerospace to textiles, steel, cement, power, food processing, tourism, health to infrastructure promsing to provide direct employment opportunities to a record 8.9 Lac persons and indirect employment to another 2 Lac persons

Even as the Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and his dynamic large and medium industries minister Murugesh R Nirani, who led from the front in ensuring the success of GIM, were rightly basking in the glory at their achievement, the state government received assurances of full support from the Centre. If Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily and Union Food Processing Minister Subodh Kant Sahai expressed their support at the inaugural function on Thursday, it was the turn of Union Labour Minister Mallikarjuna Kharge to promise all help from the Centre at the valedictory function on Friday.

The Chief Minister, in his valedictory address, made it clear that the signing of MoUs or the total volume of investments generated was only a first step in the long journey in the path of Karnataka’s industrial progress. ``A new era of industrial revolution of Karnataka has begun,” he said.

"The Government would not spare any efforts in keeping its promises to the investors or meeting the deadlines. While the chief secretary and he himself will be regularly reviewing the progress in the implementation of the project, the commerce and industry department will be doing its own follow-up measures,” he said promising that the Government would take every possible steps to cut red-tapism and procedural bottlenecks.

"If you grow and prosper, Karnataka will also benefit because the success and prosperity of the industry would lead to the State’s prosperity. Karnataka’s progress lies in your progress,” he said pointing out that the industrial growth would lead all round development of the state  and help the government in continuing with its programme of inclusive growth and the development of the agriculture sector.
Union Labour Minister Mallikarjuna Kharge, in his valedictory address, complimented the Yeddyurappa regime for its pro-active approach and industry-friendly policies and made it clear that it was imperative to build and improve existing infrastructure, roads and highways, develop the power sector and strengthen the resources like irrigation.

``There are no short-cuts in this approach and unless we put all this relevant infrastructure in place, we cannot think that an investor will have confidence to come and set up industry in the state,” he said while pointing out that investors should always bear in mind that sharing of global wealth was not exploitation of the less fortunate sections of people or countries. Inclusive growth

Kharge said the pragmatic and industry-friendly policies of the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, while laying the foundation of modern India, in encouraging public sector and infrastructure projects in irrigation, power and steel sectors in the public, joint, cooperative and private sectors and followed by successive governments had largely insulated India from the evil effects of global economic meltdown. The Government realizes that it was important to have regulatory bodies that can instill confidence in the public and industry. ``The objective is not to over regulate but to simplify and strengthen laws in order to create a more conducive investment environment,” he said.

It was necessary to focus on upgrading the skills of labour force and all other stake-holders in the present context of liberalization, globalization and changed economic scenario, he said pointing out that over 400 institutes were being upgraded with World Bank assistance and another 1,396 institutes through public-private partnership. ``By 2022, India will create 500 million skilled workers under the scheme,” he said calling for industry should join hands with the government on the public-private partnership model.

Dr K V Raju, economic advisor to the Chief Minister, in his over-view on the entire GIM exercise said the tremendous response from the industry and investors had given a big boost to the government. While a total of 361 MoUs involving a total investment of Rs 4 Lac crore were signed during the two days of GIM, he said as many as 66 companies came forward to sign MoUs during the last two days with Rs 50,000 crore investment.

``A new era of industrial development has begun in the State,” said Karnataka’s large and medium industry minister Murugesh R Nirani, pointing out that the State will reap rich dividends. ``Development of all-round economic activities, new employment generation and infrastructure facilities will happen throughout the State. The GIM will generate additional revenue to the state exchequer and will be an important milestone in Karnataka’s developmental history,” he added.

    Folks,

70% of power generated in US is from coal based plants, US has stringest environmental regulations in the world.

Instead of opposing every power plant, please insist upon stringest pollution control devices...

China on average constructs a coal based power plant every week...Now folks who insist upon gas based plants, please be advised it cost thrice to produce same amount of power with gas... are you willing to pay thrice the amount for same electricity, to make these semi-literate environmental folks happy???

Now being from Belman(less than 5 KMs from Nandikoor power plant, certainly I dont want my folks back home to be harmed) however if all pollution controls are followed, I dont want these semi-literate environmental folks to dictate their terms on everybody else....

I find some people here speak from both sides of their mouth, in one side they complain about power shortage and blame state for it, at same breath they complain we must not build coal based power plants.....

Guys search your souls....., perhaps your inner voice will answer your own questions....

    Jai Hoooooooooooooo

Good step taken by karnataka govt. This will help to most of the mangaloreans who always seeks job in gulf countries. It was better if these companies come to Mangalore. Here Govt should make sure that only kannadigas get jobs. Because currently in all companies located in bangalore we cannot see Kannadigas. Only 30% to 40% Kannadigas get jobs here and rest jobs will go to Tamilians, Telugites and North Indians. and these people rule Kannadigas, which is very sad to see in MNCs Bangalore. Thanks to you Mr. Yeddi. same time please take care of these points which I mentioned here. Cheers.

Those commenting from Middle East, please analyze...why are you away from motherland? Because there were no opportunities for you...Why did it happen? So called "intelligent" Karavali people opposed every project proposed...including the most essential power project...If we continue to do so only people who will invest in Karavali would be

    1. Money transfer agencies (to transfer money to parents)

    2. Old age homes to look after the elderly (with younger population working abroad, who will look after the elderly?)

    3. NGO`s whose focus is opposing everything in the name of environment/human rights etc.,

There are always a race to sign these MoU's. The government officials including our elected leaders will receive the kickbacks to sign these documents and are paid at the offshore level and they will allow these companies to acquire the land at cheap prices from the unsuspecting farmers.

Rather than being paranoid on what the BJP government under Mr.Yediyurappa does everytime, let us look at the positives of GIM.The average coversion to reality of MOU's signed in any state varies between 25% to 35% works out to more than a lakh crore which is better than having nothing. The present govt has for the first time since the formation of the state has shifted focus of industrial development to the far away districts. We require manufacturing industries which require ITI/vocational trainees graduates & engineers. This has been the sucessful model of TN,Maharshtra,Gujarat,Punjab,Haryana. Our past politicians focussed only on IT sector in Bangalore which requires only qualified people and was linked to the the real estate industry leaving the rest of the state underdeveloped.Even if 1/3 of the steel, cement & textile projects materialize in north karnataka it will be a big boon to them as this belt provides the labour manpower acoss states curbing migration for jobs.Change is happening in these underdeveloped areas since the new govt has come as many of the new ministers are more focussed on thier backyard rather being bangloored which was the earlier case. It is pointless criticizing the power shortages as no govt had a long term plan and good to see now at least the CM is focusing on it and these projects take long time to complete.High time some of you analyse before passing judgments. My experience is due to my reglar travelling across india over 20 years.

Where is their policitical propaganda, every village internet cafe. These investments we have to wait and see. Now only these paper figures.

Two simple situations: a lake in Sooda is repaired in two days by 3 JCB's at a cost of 1 crore. Estimated cost-1 Lakh. Rest is for the politician in charge. 50 acres is required by an industry whereas sanctioned land is 500 acres and remaining is for the politician in charge. Everything done by politicians is so. You decide.

Can Daiji world take a lead and ensure how this things progress.. MoUs are signed only if other party tends to explore benefits out of it, we need to ensure our environment land, air and water source are not depleted and polluted thus causing more harm and health issues which will further bring down the living standards of people. In a coastal city like manglore the amount of petro chemical levels in the air has started growing with surge in port traffic and foregin vessels..keep watching..

Those who dont know the facts will praise this. These are just an eye wash. Actually less than 20% companies will finally keep their promise.

Ferile agricultural land will be given to them. Also 70% migrant workers will come to work in these places...And most companies will start only after 2 years....These are not concrete achievements.

Yediyurappa, in your so called great success of the GIM, the government’s lust for Rs.4,00,000 crores I see your open invitation to the Maoist to come and rescue the vast number of farmers, dalits and tribals who will be sacrificed on the unholy altar of your industrial triumph. While the victims of the MSEZ, the poor farmers bleed, it is very ironical that the MSEZ officials can smile in front of cameras and call themselves victorious. Let Karnataka develop but not at the cost of the weaker sections of our kannadigas. All have an equal right to live in a respectful way. It is a God-given right and not got from the powers that be!!

    CM and Murgesh Nirani,IND minister
demonstrated to the prospective investors with determination and conviction of their readyness to help them @ any far.In practice the same vigour and interest to be shown and ensure the MOUs signed are put in to practice.Bureaucratic botlnecks, corruption and red tapism must be contained.Investor friedly envoirnment should be maintained in Karnataka by forming a task force to help and guide investors.

One important thing to be bear in mind that at any cost farmer's interst taken care of while making available land to the investors.Industrilisation in the expense of agriculture would be a disaster for Kannadigas as food safety is also essential for living.

Congrats Yeddi ...! Hope we see this getting converted and these getting implemented soon. I suppose there should be considerable amount of investment happening in mangalore also, and its gr8 news to us Mangaloreans as we never need to flee outside in search of a job. i hope along with the investment they also consider the infrastucture which is very important. It is very clear today that 10-15 years back when lots of companies started investing in bangalore they never considered infrastucture that was requiered for such huge investments. and today if we see all roads have been blocked and they coming up with flyovers, under pass. creating problems to commuters. But i storngly feel that BJP Govt. has taken necessary steps to rectify these things. Hope All goes well and these investments are not disturbed due to political Imbalance in the state.

It is good to hear Rs. 4 Lac Crores MOU has been signed. Now we have to see how many MOUs will be on Paper and how many will be practically implemented. We have seen from Lokayukta report of Bellary Mines that the Govt earns only Rs. 24 Per Ton from each Truck but the Mine Owners earn Rs. 5,000/-. This was also stated by Arundathi Roy recently. It gives me fear that in the name of development "Greed" will prevail. It will also give me fear that farmers land and even fertile lands will be used for Industry thereby sidelining agriculture altogether. It also gives me fear that many of the tribals in Karntaka will be displaced in the name of development resulting in creation of another moists type of outfit. All that is going to happen in Karnataka in name of development in the coming days, weeks, months and years will be the question to watch. We have to see whether the MOUs will remain or MOU-ists will be born.
