Udupi, Jun 8: “The construction of the proposed third phase of Malpe port has already gained momentum. In the first stage, tender process is under way for development works costing Rs 52 crore,” said state minister for ports and environment, Krishna J Palemar. He was addressing a press conference at the travellrs bungalow here, after inspecting Malpe port on Monday June 7.

He gave details of development works and fisheries roads being undertaken by the department in various ports of the Undivided Dakshina Kannada district and Karwar. He said that some of the proposals have not yet received sanction, while a sum of Rs 57 crore has already been sanctioned for the development of fisheries port in Mangalore.

“The government has permitted to build 5,000 houses under ‘Matsyashraya’ scheme for the fishermen. In Udupi, a list of 1,200 beneficiaries is ready. However, in Mangalore, only 35 fishermen are eligible for getting benefit under this scheme. This means that the number of ‘below poverty line’ fishermen is dwindling,” he analyzed.

Special officer, T V Balagavi, personal secretary, Dayanand, ports officer, Mohan Kudri, and engineer, Nanje Gowda, accompanied the minister.
