Western Institute of Technology – First Host Training Site for OTI Education Center, USA

Mangalore, Jul 21: Western Institute of Technology becomes the first training institution in India to be established as the Host Training Site for Great Lakes Regional OSHA Training Institute (OTI) Education Center.

The partners in the Great Lakes Regional consortium are University of Cincinnati, Department of Environmental Health Continuing Education Programme (lead center), Eastern Michigan University and the United Auto Workers. The signing ceremony was attended by Dr Judy Jarrell, Dr Godfrey Mendes, Dr Garry McDaniel, and Tim Roberts.

Under the terms of this new agreement, The Western Institute of Technology will work closely with Franklin University and the University of Cincinnati, the Department of Environmental Health Continuing Education Office to deliver training aimed at reducing the incidence of workplace safety issues in India.

Dr Judy Jarrell, director of Occupational Safety & Health Continuing Education, University of Cincinnati, said, “Ensuring the safety of workers is not just important in the United States, we are glad to be able to support the efforts of The Western Institute of Technology to ensure workers in India receive the education and training they need to create workplaces that are safe.”

“Training and education are vital components in workplace safety," said Dr Garry McDaniel, associate dean of Franklin’s Center for Professional Training and Development. This feeling was supported by Tim Roberts, president of Safety Alliance, USA. “I had the good fortune to conduct several OSHA training programmes for Franklin University and The Western Institute of Technology in India and was very impressed with the enthusiasm participants displayed for the value of safety in the workplace.”

“Enhancing the safety and health of workers through education is the goal of Western Institute of Technology and we are excited about the opportunity to work with University of Cincinnati Great Lakes Regional OTI Education Center and Franklin University to provide top quality instruction to workers in India to identify and prevent hazardous conditions before they cause injury or illness," said Dr Godfrey Mendes, chairman of Western Institute of Technology.

OSHA was established under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. OSHA's role is to promote the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health, while Western Institute of Technology, which is governed by Basil Mendes Memorial Educational and Charitable Trust, was established to provide high quality training and consultancy services to individuals and organizations of all sizes within the private and public sectors.

Western Institute of Technology is an ISO 9001:2008 certified institute, and is approved by the Government of India, Ministry of Labour and Employment registered under Directorate General of Employment and Training as Vocational Training Provider. Western Institute of Technology is now approved by IGNOU as Western Community College.
