Udupi, Jul 28: A convict on parole facing charges of raping a woman and dumping her dead body in an open well in the district, committed suicide in the District Prison, Anjaru, near Hiriadkal, here on Wednesday July 28.

Forty-five-year old Krishna Marakala is the convict who committed suicide hanging from the roof of a toilet in the prison and a native of Kokkarne here. Krishna Markala was accused of raping twenty-eight-year-old Susheela, daughter of Sheena Naika, a resident of Kandike – Nadoor, near here and dumping her dead body in an open well at Tantrady, here on February 23. Krishna Marakala accompanied Susheela, in order to attend a Yakshagana play in the neighbourhood and on the way had committed the heinous crime.

Brahmavar police arrested Krishna Markala on March 3 and since then he has been imprisoned at the prison. Meanwhile, Markala managed to escape from the prison on Saturday July 24 and was waiting for a bus in the city that would have taken him to his house at Kokkarne. However, he was arrested by the police and brought him back to his cell.

He used his vest as a noose to commit suicide. It is the first case of suicide in the history of the district prison that began functioning in the new building at Anjaru, here since one and a half years. Another convict had also tried to commit suicide in the same prison three months ago, but survived.
