Mangalore, Aug 3: “Vanamahotsava, green revolution 2k10, the planting of saplings took place at AIMIT, the new campus for management and IT of St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Kotekar here on Monday August 2.
Vijaya Kumar, deputy conservator of forests, Mangalore, was the chief guest. Fr Denzil Lobo, director, AIMIT welcomed the chief guest and the large number of students and faculty gathered for the programme.
Fr Lobo said that it is very important that each one of us is aware of the grim situation the whole world faces due to global warming. This phenomenon is aggravated by cutting of trees and denuding the forests. The forest cover of the world is shrinking every day and due to carbon emission the earth is getting warmer resulting in the melting of the glaciers, he observed.
He said that it is imperative that each one of us is aware of the environmental damage and work towards creating a sustainable world by planting trees and minimizing polluting the environment. He called upon the students to plant more trees and thus make this world a better living place for the future generations of people.
Vijaya Kumar also impressed upon the student community the need for planting trees. He mentioned that the water cover of our planet is dwindling. He said that the source of pure potable water is just 3% of the total aquatic source and due to global warming the glaciers are melting , thus reducing the amount of potable water. If this continues, the world will be covered with water and our civilization might face a real threat, he said. He encouraged the students to do their best to plant trees and conserve forests.
The formal function ended with the oath-taking administered by Fr Denzil to all those gathered, to plant trees and to look after them and hence to make this world a better place to live in.
This was followed by planting of the trees by the chiefgGuest and some of the faculty members. In all 600 tree saplings of various varieties will be planted in the campus.
Fr Denzil Lobo SJ thanked Vijaya Kumar and his team for making available such a large number of saplings for the campus.
