M'lore: Saheli – Valencia Parish Women’s Cell Organizes Career Orientation Programme

Mangalore, Aug 23: A career orientation/guidance programme for the students of class VIII to class X was organized by Saheli – women’s cell of St Vincent Ferrer parish, Valencia at the parish hall here on Sunday August 22.

Dr Norbert Lobo, co-ordinator of postgraduate, department of economics and associate professor of economics at St Aloysius College was the resource person. Valencia parish priest Fr Bonaventure Nazareth and assistant parish priest Fr Roshan Crasta were also present.

Fr Bonaventure Nazareth, in his introductory address stressed on the need for career guidance in the early life of an individual. He urged the participants to make the optimum use of career guidance programme. 

Dr Norbert Lobo in the course of his presentation highlighted the need for a proper counseling and said that guidance would lead to a successful career. While he spoke on the confusion between the parent and the child on various modules, he cautioned the students present to think of what was best and appropriate. At the present times, the parents are urged not to push a child into activities that they were deprived of. The focus was laid on Ability + Interest + Goals. 

Dr Lobo called upon the parents not to be influenced by the society/external factors and rather understand the ability of a child. The students were advised to excel in their studies for a better future and also to keep their minds open for alternative fields in a career. Children were informed that interest was the key for any decision making. Dreams and goals of a child were also stressed upon. 

Children were asked to set smarter goals for a better and prosperous future. Parents need to HUG – Help your Child, Understand your child and Guide your child. Goals are not dreams, dreams become goals, he said. 

Jacintha Sequeira, president of Saheli, women’s cell, Valencia parish compered the programme. Molly Pinto proposed the vote of thanks.
