1 killed, 5 hurt in Bandra building collapse

Mumbai, Jun 7 (IANS): A 28-year-old youth was killed and five others injured when a building collapsed in the Kherwadi area of Bandra East on Monday, officials said.

At around 2.30 a.m., the five-storey structure Razzak Chawl crashed on an adjoining two-storey tenement, trapping many families as they slept.

Locals rescued six from the crash debris while the Mumbai Fire Brigade managed to save 11 more from the rubble.

The victim was identified as Riyaz Ahmad. The five injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, as the search continues for more victims.

    This part of Bandra and Khar East one of the congested places. This building collapse was bound to happen. So far there was only one casualty. I feel sorry that many people must be displaced and that too monsoons are round the corner.

    Kherwadi spreaded from bandra east to khar east one of congested place where in find many old buildings stretch around. Nearby also located Behrampada one of sensitive place during mumbai riots. Too far is place of Late Shri Balasaheb Thakeray's Maatoshree Bunglow situated there itself. When people stay in large numbers at one place exceed limit in old bldgs...chances of destruction is more.

    Heeralal Mumbai.How old was this building?I t depends upon not only congested living but how old and how it was built.We hear nowadays fast built buildings are collapsing earlier than its life span.Whereas buildings built in British times are still stay upright in Mumbai and elsewhere selbst.Sad someone lost life.Heartfelt sympathy to the family .May his /her soul rest in peace.
