Bengaluru, Jun 8: Former minister and retired professor, Mumtaz Ali Khan (94), passed away on Monday June 7 due to old age-related ailments. He breathed his last at his residence in Ganganagar here.

He is survived by wife, son and a daughter. The funeral was performed at the Quddoos Saheb burial ground on Palace Road on Monday afternoon.

Mumtaz Ali Khan had served as the minister for minority welfare, Haj and Waqf in 2008 in Yediyurappa's cabinet. He had left BJP to join the Congress in 2013. He then gave up his membership of the council for the sake of the then KPCC president, G Parameshwar, who was defeated in the assembly election. He was promised a good position when he gave up the membership of the council but the same was not met.

He had served as the sociology professor in the University of Agricultural Sciences. He had set up an educational institution in the name of his deceased son and was running it for the last three decades where he provided free education, free midday meal, books and uniforms. Chief minister B S Yediyurappa and many other dignitaries have condoled his demise.
