Beltangady: Eight-kilometre road can transform lives of Elaneeru residents

Beltangady, Jul 1: The people of Elaneeru in this taluk have to cover 126 km of the road to reach the gram panchayat that is just eight km away. For reaching the nearest bank too they have to cover 126 km and the same distance to go to a hospital. Elaneeru which is located on the border of Dakshina Kannada with Chikkamagaluru district, many treat, as a damned place.

The people here have been suffering from multifarious problems since the last several decades. If an eight kilometre road is developed, the lives of the people here will be truly transformed.

Elaneeru has 135 houses with over 600 residents. The people have to go to Samse and reach Malavanthige gram panchayat via Kudremukh, Bajagoli and Beltangady. They have to spend a minimum of Rs 500 to visit the gram panchayat or taluk panchayat.

The villagers have been demanding to develop an eight km road between Didupe and Elaneeru. This road passes through forest region. But the forest department has been blocking the efforts to lay this road. There is a mud road on this stretch now, but during the rainy season, it is impossible to use this road. During the summer season, only jeeps move on this road.

During the rainy season, people have to lift the sick people and carry them over their shoulders for eight km. Beltangady MLA Harish Poonja, has discussed the issue with higher officials in the forest department. The state government is planning to develop Elaneeru-Samse road. The officials are willing to conduct a survey now. The MLA discussed the matter with chief forest conservator Vijayakumar Gogi and assistant conservator of forests, Subhash K Malkhede. If this road is developed, Malavanthige village can be reached by covering just eight km.

    There is a long pending proposal that this village along with Guthyadka should be transferred to Chikmagalur district. People had represented to the successive Taluq Re-organisation committees to include them in the Kalasa Taluq as and when it was formed. The Vasudeva Rao Committee, 1973 had taken note of this request positively. I had also endorsed this proposal in my book, Ballalarayana Durga" published in June 2019. I find that though the new Kalasa Taluq was formed in 2020 and final Notification issued in April 2012, the 2 villages from Belthangady taluq are not yet included in the new taluq. If sufficient political pressure is exerted, I feel, it should be possible to effect the necessary changes at the earliest. Then the Kalasa taluq headquarters will be only 7 kilometres from Yeleneeru! hence I suggest that the old proposal should be pursued more vigorously instead of making a new road in the reserve forest area!
