Kasargod, Sep 25: The illegally stored sand that was seized by the revenue department over the last couple of days was auctioned for Rs 13,16,104 here on Saturday September 25.
Of the total 2720 tonnes of illegally stored sand that was seized from the border area of Talapady following a raid, 1815 tonnes was put on auction.
Speaking to reporters here on Friday September 25 night, deputy tahsildar Damodaran said that 915 tonnes of sand had been stolen by the sand mafia.
On Saturday morning, those involved in the sand mafia staged a protest even while the auction was in process. However, adequate security was provided to the revenue department officers by the Manjeshwar police.
The sand that had been seized on September 23 and 24 was illegally stored in various places like Padavu, Kunjattur, Tuminadu and Manjalu, after being transported from Netravati and surrounding areas in Karnataka.
