Bengaluru: Dakshina Kannada among districts having rain deficit

Bengaluru, Aug 21: It has been two and half months since southwest monsoon entered the state. The meteorological department has said that only two districts in Karnataka have received less than normal rainfall so far. All other districts have received either normal or above normal rainfall. Even interior places of Karnataka have recorded good rainfall. In August however, the rainfall lost its intensity and a shortfall was noticed in 19 districts in that month.

The rain deficit is particularly witnessed in Dakshina Kannada and Ramanagara districts. All the north interior Karnataka districts have received either normal or more than normal rains. Out of 16 districts which fall within south interior Karnataka, ten have got good rainfall. The rains have been less in all the three coastal districts. The rainfall in the coast has been 18 percent less than normal. North interior Karnataka has received 31 percent more rainfall while south interior Karnataka got seven percent more. Highest rain deficit has been witnessed in Dakshina Kannada district (25%) and Ramanagara (23%). Even Kolar and Chitradurga have got more rain this time.

The rain shortage was witnessed between August 12 to 18, in coastal areas and north interior Karnataka. The coast received 58 percent less rainfall during this month.

In addition to Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, Bidar, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Kalaburagi and Tumakuru also got less rainfall. Chitradurga and Chamarajanagar got more rainfall.
