Moodbidri, Oct 5: On Monday October 4, survey of the area from the old police station in the town to Alangar was undertaken to identify illegal buildings. Probationary IAS officer, Rohini Sindhuri Dasari, who is in-charge chief officer of the local municipal council, tahsildar, Muralidhar, municipal chief officer, and Ganesh, engineer of Mangalore subdivision of National Highways Authority of India, Umesh Kamath, participated in the survey work.
As per this survey, the BJP office building, Vivekananda Press and a few buildings adjacent to it, compound wall of Kallu Basadi, Barkana Atikari Basadi and a part of DJVV Sangha were identified for demolition later. Owners of several of these buildings volunteered on Monday itself to vacate their buildings.
Several illegal constructions standing in the town on the main road were demolished by the municipal authorities on Monday. The town was enveloped in thick smoke as backhoes got busy with demolition drive. As notices had been served in advance, occupants of several buildings had vacated them on Saturday and Sunday. As some people volunteered to demolish their buildings on their own, they were spared.
Advocate, Shantiprasad Hegde, in the meantime, warned that civil, criminal and contempt of court proceedings would be initiated against the municipal chief officer and in-charge chief officer, if the shops of the municipality are also demolished in the name of demolition drive, reminding the authorities that stay orders have been procured against their demolition. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, he said that his clients, Monappa Moolya and Paul D’Souza, who run shops in municipal building, have procured permanent injunctions against their eviction from the court. He accused the municipality of trying to forcibly evict his clients from their shops, and establish a police outpost in the said building.
In the meantime, trustee of local Basadis, Anadka Dainesh Kumar Patnashetty and Sudhesh Kumar requested the officials to spare old compound walls of the Basadis from the demolition drive.
