Mangalore, Oct 21: Syndicate Bank and Vijaya Bank have jointly sponsored a trust under the name of Jnana Jyothi Financial Literacy and Counseling trust with its registered office at Manipal.

The trust will extend free financial literacy and credit counseling services to existing and potential customers of all the banks in their 10 leading districts in Karnataka such as Belgaum, Bijapur, Haveri, Bagalkot, Mandya and Bellary among others.
 
To start with, the trust opened offices at Udupi and Mangalore on Wednesday October 20.
 
The other offices viz Kumta and Mandya will be opened on Thursday October 21 and on Saturday October 23 respectively.
 
Financial literacy is an integral part of the financial inclusion. It is not just about imparting financial knowledge and information. It is also about an attempt in changing the behavior in the financial pattern and activities of individuals. The ultimate goal is empowerment of people.

When people know about the financial products available and when they are able to evaluate the merits and demerits of each product and the suitability of the product for their specific needs they are in a better position to decide what they want and feel empowered in a meaningful way. They will also know enough to demand accountability for the deficiencies in the service and also seek redressal of grievances.
