Karnataka govt seeks information on religious conversions in 25 years

Bengaluru, Oct 29 (IANS): The Karnataka government has directed the Department of Minorities Welfare to provide information on persons who have got converted from one religion to another in 25 years.

The Committee on Welfare of Minorities, Backward Classes which met on October 13 has sought this information and the Joint Secretary of Legislative Assembly has recently written a letter to the Department of Minorities Welfare, according to sources.

Department of Minorities Welfare has been advised to get information on religious conversions in coordination with Social Welfare, Police, Revenue Departments, district commissioners and chief executive officers.

Chief minister Basavaraj Bommai

The order has been given to see to it that no trouble is caused to authorized churches while getting information regarding religious conversions. The additional information could be gathered from Social Welfare, Revenue, Internal Administration and Law departments and submitted within 30 days, the letter has said.

The Joint Secretary has also sought information on the progress in the investigation of 36 cases of forceful conversions between 2016 and 2021, and information on punishments. It has also been told to collect detailed information on Bethel Baptist Church in Hosadurga of Chitradurga district.

The committee on welfare of backward classes and minorities discussed the survey on October 13 and asked the deputy commissioners to carry out the survey of churches. The acting Chairman of the Committee, Hosadurga BJP MLA Goolihatti Shekar vehemently proposed the survey. He had also raised the issue in the Monsoon assembly session.

Earlier it was said that the Karnataka government has put a hold on the proposal to survey official, unofficial churches and bible societies with an objective to prevent alleged religious conversions following backlash. The sources in the department of minorities welfare also stated that the ruling BJP is awaiting the verdict of the High Court on PIL in this regard.

Sources explained that the recent letter to collect information on religious conversions has been written to prepare grounds for banning forceful religious conversions in the state.

I was expecting the new CM is educated and smart enough to handle the present situation in Karnataka on this subject. Now it is clear that he too a slave of the BD RSS VHP who control the political party and has made him a puppet. The entire state is worried about how to win next elections. The issue is not to find out the reasons for conversions, neither the havoc of BD RSS,but only worry if the people convert then they do not vote us. There could be conversions due to discriminations experienced at worship places where the people might feel ignored or untouchability followed. There could be reasons they are not happy with the practice of centuries old rituals and traditions and the same has happened in western countries where people started joining ISCON Krishna followers. They simply wanted to know how many votes have gone from the last 25 years. The government do not want to respect religios freedom as stated in the Indian constitution but plan to amend it according to their convenience to protect their votes but it will never work as you cannot stop work of God.

Jesus told us so: “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Paul told us so: “Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12). We should not fear suffering as Jesus said, “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you” (Matthew 5:11-12). The apostles took these words to heart: “Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name” (Acts 5:41). Many of our brothers and sisters around the world regularly face suffering and persecution. While we may desire to be spared from great suffering in the future, we need to recognize that suffering is not antithetical to the Christian life, but rather part of the normal Christian life as we follow Christ in this world. We may or may not experience this “tribulation” period, but we will go through tribulation, so let us heed the call to the church in the Book of Revelation to hold fast to our faith in all circumstances. Jesus continually tells us that we should be ready because he will come at an hour we do not know and do not expect. Our lives could end at any time or he could return at any time, so let us remain faithful and remind others of this important truth.

A clear proof of government incapacity for development, just diverting people minds. Any religion is come into existence in order to seek one true and living God. If people can see God in stones trees humans what is wrong some one see God in Jesus christ. There is no need to convert from one religion to other to know God personally. God is not an hindu christian or muslim. God is not interested in religion but in a right relationship with him. What is wrong some one find a right relation with true and loving God through Jesus. Why politise the religion. Is Hinduism is property of BJP. Not for Congress and others. Why use religion to get votes. Show the developments and ask for votes. People should not sell their religion for votes. Please open your eyes

Well said Raju. It is only after 2014 inspite of having a Hindu PM and Hindu government at center and Hindu Chief Minister and Hindu Ministers all over the country how come Hinduism is in danger. Why was it not so during the Congress rule. The reason is very simple. This BJP government wants to survive by playing the religion card and stirring up the religious sentiments of common Hindu man. BJP knows if they don't do this then even the common Hindu population will start asking questions about zero development in the country. As a matter of fact Hinduism was safe for the last 5000 years and will continue to be safe for the next 10000 years. Time for the common Hindu population to wake up to stop listening to this nonsense and boot out these crafty politicians and government before it is too late.

The present CM is becoming desperate becoz he feels Hindu population is dwindling. So many Hindu souls are lost due to suicides. In a recent news report I read that two different families in two different locations of Karnataka committed suicide. Many families are wiped by suicide. First of all .. Mr CM you focus on establishing counselling centres to handle such cases. Also work on providing basic amenities like proper education, employment, and also work eradicating poverty. Focus on price control. These are the things a CM of a state should be doing and not indulging on targetting people on silly issues.

What Government has to do with this? During elections different parties do campeigns and win elections. Likewise different people preach their faiths. Let people decide which God they should choose.

Better focus on why people convert or find solace in another religious practices instead of remaining with the one he is born with. Despite being wealthy we have seen some people didn't have peace of mind and depressed and when they find it by following some other it is his fundamental right to choose. Lure of money or food will only last till it runs out. Time to focus on in what way we can redress the problems of society financially and socially to prevent that miniscule happenings. Time to lower fuel taxes loot immediately thereby lowering inflation of all goods and services first, no amount of diversions and appeasement of votebank would change the ground reality. Politicians shouldn't dabble with religious sentiments for its survival.

What Non-sense... Is this a main issue for the government to which Religion one has converted and which God one is following? Absolutely non-sense... No Government in the world is here to dictate what Religion what has to follow...... It is the choice of human to choose the best which ever He/she finds the best among others... Similarly it is the fundamental rights of human to preach about God to fellow human... Do we wish to see our neighbors burning in fire in this world? No, when we can't see them burning in this world, then how can we see them burning in Hell? That's what brotherhood is... Teach the right things to those who are ignorant of it.... The biggest sin what a human commits is not to understand true God and worshiping wrong God. When a CM or PM of any country can't tolerate if we start insulting him then how can one expect a God will tolerate, whose mercy upon us are in abundance and every second of our life is dependent on His mercy. The mere purpose of sending human is to worship Him alone and follow His commands to lead a successful life.

I prefer all Christians to protest whole heartily with non-co-operation, non-violent, abstaining from any kind of votes in elections till it withdraws this draconian Christians worship places surveys by targeting and demonizing in the name is conversions to the community . I want to ask the Basavaraj Bommai C.M of Karnataka and Karnataka MLA Goolihatti Shekhar, during your Assembly Elections time how much you have lured the voters with empty freebies, brain washed promises and with money. Luring the voters is an offense. Tell us how many you have lured while campaigning. Don't be senseless in surveying Christian Churches and their worshipping places private or public in the name of conversions. I also want to ask when you, all the police personnel to get transferred, are you not brainwashing & luring the higher authorities or the Ministers with suitcases and this is a grave offense.
