Kundapur, Oct 30: Social welfare minister, Kota Srinivas Poojary, who checked the under construction post matric girls hostel building near T T Road ward in the town at a cost of Rs 3.63 crore, was upset when he observed the poor workmanship and defective construction. Poojary noted that work executed at the water taps also were poor and the exhaust fans fixed in the kitchen appear to be teasing those who are conducting work. He took the official of the department who was present to task.

The minister questioned the engineer of the company that executed the work about the poor workmanship and poor standard of materials. He called the head of the contracting firm and asked him to set right the defects within 15 days. He instructed to make payment only after finding that all works are done and good quality is maintained. He offered to discuss additional grants if any needed for using good quality tiles.

Kota spoke to media persons and expressed the view that the government money should not be wasted and students should not be housed in poor quality buildings. He said that the department had written to the concerned twice but the contractor has not set the work in order.

Poojary went through the building work Friday. He observed that instead of tiles, low quality stones have been used. He felt that it would be not proper to accommodate students in poor quality building and that the concern for the flooring. He stated that the concerned have been instructed to address he quality issue. He said that two letters were written the contractor but they have not attended to them so far.

Social welfare department district deputy director, Anita P Madlur, taluk officer, Raghavendra Varnekar and BJP leaders were present. The minister also went through the post matric hostel building construction in progress near Sangam area. Municipal chief officer Gopalakrishna Shetty, was present.
