Hassan, Nov 3: Travelling on Shiradi Ghat road has become a nightmare. During the rainy season the road literally turns into a valley of death. In the 26 km long stretch of the road many areas are marked only for one way traffic. Even if the driver makes a slight error, grave danger is imminent.
In many areas of the ghat landslides occur during the rainy season. Many times, the ghat is closed by the administration. There is no permanent solution in sight as of now. Though a concrete road was constructed till Gunday, due to heavy rain, it also got damaged.
Every year the road is being repaired. The contractors who are doing the job are getting richer. The plight of vehicle drivers has not improved at all since many years. In many places where there was a landslide during the last rainy season, only sand bags are kept and 'go slow' boards are placed.
The commuters on this ghat feel that only if the tunnel is made on this ghat, traversing would be safe. The movement of heavy vehicles is causing danger to the other vehicles also as most of the ghat is one way traffic. The administration has to wake up immediately and do the needful to save the lives of people and also prevent delay in transportation of goods from capital to Mangaluru and vice versa.
