Mangalore, Jan 8: Mangalore University (MU) vice chancellor (VC), T C Shivashankara Murthy, felt that crime rate in the society will come down, if school dropout rate is drastically brought down.
He was speaking at the valedictory ceremony of the seminar on crime prevention organized by the city police commissionerate, in association with criminology department of Roshni Nilaya here on Friday January 7.
“If an individual gets proper education, his tendency to get involved with crime diminishes. The students, whose education gets truncated, are more prone to become criminals. No one is born criminal, but environment and experience force them to get involved with crime. In our country, youth form about 65% of the population, but only 60% of them are able to get education till PUC,” he noted.
Police commissioner, Seemant Kumar Singh, in his address, said that decimating crime is impossible, but that it can be brought down. He noted that training is very much essential for the investigators to be able to investigate crimes scientifically. He said that the seminars like this come in handy for the policemen and the students.
On this occasion, various essays prepared by president of Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists Union, Harsha, prof Vinita, Jayish K, senior advocate, Keshava Nandody, were presented. A book, ‘Media and Crime, Human and Crime’, was released. Over 200 students participated. T C Shivashankara Murthy and Seemant Kumar Singh released the newly brought out e-challan machine, which will be used by the traffic policemen for levying accurate on-the spot fines for minor violation of traffic rules, and handed the same to traffic inspector, Manjunath Shetty.
Roshni Nilaya principal, Dr Jacinta D’Souza, delivered introductory address. Head of criminology department, Dr Ashok, deputy commissioners of police, R Ramesh and Mutturaya, were present. Kiran Kotian of criminology department of the college, who had worked hard for the success of the programme, was felicitated. Amoolya Rodrigues compered the programme. Dhanashree Gopal welcomed. Shruti Shetty proposed the vote of thanks.
