Bengaluru, Mar 10: The state government told the high court that the chief minister has given his approval for the plan to clear solid waste stockpile that has accumulated in the landfill unit at Pachanady over the last many years.
A public interest litigation filed by Karnataka State Legal Services Authority was taken up for consideration by a division bench headed by Chief Justice, Ritu Raj Awasthi, on Wednesday March 9. During the previous hearing, the high court had instructed the state government to hasten the cabinet clearance of the proposal as the same is pending for too long. The petitioner has alleged that the landfill unit has been contaminating the water of River Phalguni, from which drinking water is supplied.
Additional advocate general, Dhyan Chinnappa, who appeared on behalf of Mangalore City Corporation, informed that the chief minister had given his assent for a plan costing Rs 73 crore for clearing the solid waste at Pachanady that had suffered landslide some years back and created a crisis of sorts for a large area including houses and other structures.
The additional advocate general also said that the city corporation commissioner, on March 8, issued consent letter to the party whose tender has been accepted, and that work on the same will begin soon.
