Karkala: Gaur barges into area inhabited by people, inflicts damage

Karkala, Mar 30: A gaur forced itself into an area inhabited by people at Mullyakkaru Jaddu in Nire village in the taluk on Tuesday March 29.The animal left the crops raised in the field destroyed and parts of the house damaged due to its angry movements.

The gaur was sighted in the courtyard of a house in Mullyakaru in the Nirebailoor reserve forest area at around .1.30 pm. The people tried to shoo it away by shouting at the animals at the top of their voices but failed. The family conveyed information to the gram panchayat after which the Nire gram panchayat development officer, president, vice president, ward member, taluk panchayat former member, village accountants etc assessed the situation and informed the forest department.

Range forest officer of Karkala, Dinesh, supported by Karkala wildlife division range forest officer Smita, undertook an operation to catch the animal. With the help of expert veterinarians who came from Mangaluru, and JCB, tipper, tractor etc, the operation began. After an effort lasting five hours, the gaur was injected with tranquilizer, taken away and released in the Kudremukh wildlife sanctuary. The gaur was approximately aged eight. It is said that the gaur, which was agitated by the din raised by the people would have posed danger to the people if immediate operation to shift it was not launched.
