Mangaluru: Southern Railway records 27% increase in freight revenue

Mangaluru, Apr 6: Southern Railway has registered a 14% increase in freight loading and a 27% increase in revenue for 2021-22.

Revenue rose to Rs 2,744 crore from last year’s Rs 2,162 crore, which is 2% higher than the target set by the Railway Board.

Southern Railway loaded 30.56 million tonnes of freight marking a 14% rise from last year’s 26.84 million tonnes.

The railway division loaded 13.5 million tonnes of coal in 3,305 rakes, 0.45 million tonnes of iron and steel, 2.08 million metric tonnes of cement, 2.8 million metric tonnes of fertilisers and 1.99 million tonnes of food grains which were substantially higher than last year.

Automobile loading rose 56% with 774 rakes compared to 544 rakes last year.

Southern Railway registered an incremental traffic of 2.19 million metric tonnes and earned Rs 190 crore from new commodities captured from April to October of 2021-22.

The railway division also transported 95 rakes of oxygen during the Covid-19 pandemic.
