Mangaluru: Fish factory mishap – Death toll reaches five, four taken into custody

Mangaluru, Apr 18: The police took four people into custody in connection with the death of five workers in the fish meal factory at Bajpe, which took place on the evening of Sunday April 17.

Three workers died on Sunday night itself. Two other who were seriously ill and admitted to the hospital, died on the morning of Monday April 18. They are identified as Sharafat Ali and Meerajul Islam. They were working in the waste collection tank of the company. Three people are still getting treated in the hospital.

The information about the death of the workers is already conveyed to their relatives. Their bodies will be handed over to their next of kin after post mortem.

The company where the mishap occurred is Shree Ulka LLP. It is owned by Raju, son of Gorakh, native of Mumbai.

The persons who are in police custody are production manager of the company Ruby Joseph, area manager Kuber Ghade, supervisor Mohammed Anwar and a local named Farooq, resident of Azad Nagar Ullal, who used to look after the welfare of labourers of the company. A case for negligence and not providing any safety equipment is registered on these four people by Bajpe police.

Mangaluru, Apr 18: In a tragedy that occurred in the fish meal factory at Bajpe on Sunday April 17 evening, three people died and two got seriously injured.

Three labourers of West Bengal origin, who got down into the huge tank that is used for cleaning fishes that arrive from various places, died while removing the cleaned fish from the tank. Two are admitted to hospital in serious condition.

In total, eight labourers got down into the tank. The deceased are identified as Nizamuddin, Ummer Farooq, Mohammad and Samiuallah Islam. Sharafat Ali and Meerajul Islam suffered serious injuries. Hassan Ali, Mohammed Karibullah and Hafizullah also suffered injuries and were hospitalised.

As usual the eight labourers got down into the tank that purifies the fish. The exact reason for the mishap is not known. The fish factory is closed after the incident.

Senior police officers of Panambur and Bajpe have visited the spot and are investigating further.

Police commissioner N Shashi Kumar informed that the incident took place when a labourer was loading fish waste into a dumping tank. “The labourer collapsed and seven others tried to rescue him. Hence, eight of them were involved in the incident.”
