Udupi, Feb 15: “The fruits of research conducted in respect of diseases passed over through genes should reach the common people. These researches should never get confined to the four walls of the research centres or laboratories,” felt secretary, health research, union department of health and family welfare, Dr V M Katoch.
He was speaking after inaugurating the international seminar on ‘genomics genetic diseases and diagnosis’ organized by Manipal Life Sciences Centre (MLSC) of Manipal University in Manipal on Monday February 14.
“Like in researchers on several other subjects, the researchers in genetic diseases too are overtaken by an inner feeling that their researches will not be able to reach the masses. They should drive away this feeling from their minds. More research centres about genetic diseases need to be set up all over the country. There are ample opportunities for research in this field. For this purpose, nine ministries including the health research unit of the central government fund these researches. There is no fund crunch for this sector. A researcher who gets involved with this research, should work honestly to ensure that his actual findings are made known to the people,” he said.
Manipal University vice-chancellor, Dr K Ramnarayan, presided. Indian Society of Human Genetics president, DR V R Rao, university registrar, Dr G K Rao, and Dr Lalji Singh were present.
