Mangalore: Beary Academy Averse to Joining Minorities Welfare Department

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Feb 16: State Kannada and culture minister, Govind Karjol, has said that the government has received a proposal to bring Urdu and Beary Sahitya Academies under the minorities’ welfare department. He said that in all likelihood, Urdu Academy alone would be brought under the minorities’ welfare department for the present.

Both Urdu and Beary Academies were hitherto functioning under the department of Kannada and culture. In the recent past, the state minorities welfare department made a proposal to link the above two academies with itself. The minister said that Beary Academy has expressed its reservations against this proposal.

Beary Sahitya Academy president, M B Abdurrahman, said that he had expressed his opposition when he came to know that there was a proposal to bring Beary Sahitya Academy under Urdu Academy. He expressed the apprehension that bringing the academy under the minorities welfare department might rob it of the  chance to get equal opportunities in getting grants from the government. He felt that the independent functioning of the academy also may be disturbed if it is linked with the minorities welfare department.
