Mangalore, Feb 19: City police commissioner, Seemant Kumar Singh, informed that the police department is considering a proposal to station a unit of Rapid Action Force in the outskirts of the city. He was giving information about the steps being undertaken by the commissionerate after it was set up in the city, on Friday February 18, at a programme of interaction undertaken in the office of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) here.
“The Rapid Action Force needs at least 30 acres of land. Once this land is allotted, the unit will become functional as early as possible,” he clarified. He also informed that the city will soon have ultra modern traffic regulation system, in which 32 cameras that can catch pictures even in 360 degree angles will be installed in areas where traffic density is considerable. “This will enable the policemen to monitor the situation by sitting in a point and to ensure that traffic does not become congested,” he explained.
He said that there is a proposal to begin IVRS service in the commissionerate at an early date. “We also are considering the desirability of bringing into practice the wheel locking system for regulating the practice of parking vehicle in unauthorized zones by the people. We are also in talks with the railways about beginning pre-paid auto rickshaw services near railway stations,” he revealed. He said that compared to the city roads, accident, death and injury rates are high in the roads in the outskirts of the city. Therefore, the department is thinking of starting two traffic police stations with Mulky and Tokkottu as their headquarters, he informed. The city traffic police system is also being beefed up with the addition of 100 policemen, he added. The other initiatives of the commissionerate will be opening of outposts in prominent localities of the city for enabling the staff to take rest and have snacks. These outposts will be open only for a part of the day, and will be more useful during summer and rainy seasons, he explained.
Singh informed that the policemen have collected about five lac rupees as fine for traffic violations in the city within a month, through e-challan system. “This system is transparent and there is no scope for corruption. Even people can get information about the fines so collected,” he revealed.
