Mangalore: Mayor Election Today – BJP Announces Its Candidates

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Feb 28: At the meeting of BJP leaders held here on Sunday February 27, the BJP finalized the names of Pravin for the post of the city mayor, and Geeta N Nayak, for the post of the deputy mayor.

Election for these posts is scheduled to be held today at 11 am. Pravin got elected from Derebail (south) ward, while Geeta Nayak represents Mannagudda ward in the city.

Pravin’s name was cleared as per earlier expectations, as the only other eligible candidate for the post, which is reserved for a candidate from scheduled caste category, was Amitakala. As the post of the deputy mayor was earmarked for a woman, and a woman was the city mayor during the tenure that has just ended, the party leaders picked Pravin over Amitalaka.

The Congress, which does not have any chance of ensuring victory for its candidates, has decided to field Appi for the post of the mayor, and Mamata Shenoy for the post of the deputy mayor. The BJP has already picked its names for the city corporation’s standing committees. The party has asked those who have been appointed from the city corporation to different authorities and committees, to resign from their respective posts, to enable it to fill the vacancies afresh.
