Tendulkar Says No to Honorary Doctorate

Bangalore, Mar 5: Citing professional reasons, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar is said to have turned down the honorary doctorate to be conferred on him by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS).

Tendulkar is said to have told the RGUHS V-C, registrar and two syndicate members that he wasn't inclined to accept the varsity honour as he was still active in professional cricket. He said that he had declined similar honour from other universities abroad and respected the decision of the university to confer the title on him.

The university is now awaiting an official regret letter from him, which will be forwarded to governor HR Bhardwaj, who is the chancellor of the university.

The health varsity syndicate will meet on March 8 to discuss the issue. With Sachin declining the offer, some members say that the university might not confer honorary doctorate in this year's convocation.

In a strange coincidence, two universities - RGUHS and University of Mysore - chose to honour the cricketer this year. The University of Mysore is yet to communicate to him their decision to honour him.

If a well known University is
conferring a doctorate to a person
    honouring his or her achievement
in any noble field of service,
    that is great.

But this "Dr" mania has gone out
    of control recently. Since there
is no legal barricades to check
all the fake "Doctors", it seems
like anybody can put a title
    "Dr" without facing legal
    retribution.

    There are hundreds of "diploma
mills" in the U.S, and many people
have paid for their "Dr" title.
Some mills have a flat rate, and
can pay according to the degree
they need. Yet, some other mills
have a policy of submitting a
    thesis with a contribution, the
degree will reach home within a
    few days.

    Instant Doctors are like the
    instant coffee business. Even
some of my relatives put "Dr", and
how I can question their freedom
    of choice in such foolishness?
When I read an article in English
    written by one instant Doctor
I had laughter at first, but it
turned as an indignation later on.

Mr Bulsam I also totally agree with view points. The day when CHIMOO denied Doctorate By Guv of his own reasons, he CHIMOO)took as a matter of prestige. But my question for those learned people -is working for name and fame?CHIMOO is bigger than that so called doctorate. What Ramesh Tendulkar did was perfectly correct.VCs and Syndicates of our universities need to draw LOC in future awards.

I feel sorry about this doctorate offering business. A doctorate degree should be achieved through thesis and not to be conferred on rich and powerful people to please them. Sachin is an honorable player and he never wanted to accept the doctorate degree for name sake. In fact these institutes should stop the practice of offering doctorate degrees to those rich people who have donated huge sum to the offering institution. It is totally farce and such person should not be allowed to use the title Dr. before their name.
