Mangaluru, Jun 9: “The Zulekha Yenepoya Institute of Oncology supported by Tata Trust will be inaugurated at Ullal to provide treatment to cancer patients at nominal cost from Saturday, June 11,” said Yenepoya vice chancellor Dr M Vijayakumar.

Speaking at a news conference held at Deralakatte on Tuesday, he said that a large number of people become victims of cancer and die in India. “Cancer is found among people of all ages. It makes people shrink financially. Non-availability of cancer treatment in some places causes deaths. Tata trust is leading as a ray of hope for the poor in cancer treatment. Yenepoya medical institute also has been providing modern medicine at reasonable rates for decades. Zulekha Yenepoya institute hopes to provide treatment to rural people at low rates. The efforts of Tata institute in the campaign against cancer in the country providing support and growth have been immense. Tata is leading in the treatment of cancer in the country. The model concept of the control of cancer issued by Tata consists of awareness, initial identification, admission and capacity to reach. It provides basic facilities to treat cancer patients in the participation of private organizations,” he said.

Head of the department of oncology Dr Jalaluddin Akbar said that radiotherapy and nuclear medicine departments are added in the new institute. “Treatment facilities and basic facilities are completely modernized. Tata trust has partnered by providing funds. The centre has come up in an area of about 36,000 square feet. It has a building with six floors, two radiotherapy bunkers and a brachytherapy bunker. True beam radiotherapy machine is being used for cancer. Separate bed of six degrees is arranged for x rays. There are separate nuclear medicine facilities including PET and CT scanner. There are day care facilities with ten beds for chemotherapy. The project is implemented by Tata trust through Almelo charitable foundation. A team of oncologists who are trained in international standards will be providing treatment at nominal rates,” he said.

Oncology department heads Dr Achyuth Nayak, Dr Rajesh Krishna, Dr Rohan Shetty and Arun S Nath were present.
