Indian Girl Raped, Murdered, Stuffed Inside Suitcase in Australia

Indian Girl Raped, Murdered, Stuffed Inside Suitcase in Australia

Melbourne, Mar 14 (PTI): A 24-year-old Indian student has been found raped and murdered after her body was located stuffed inside a suitcase near a canal in Sydney last week.

"On 11 March morning, construction workers found the suitcase containing the woman's body in a water canal near Meadowbank Park and alerted police," said a statement issued by the local police.

The victim was identified as Indian student Tosha Thakkar and police were now waiting for the results of a post-mortem examination to determine exactly how she died. They have confirmed she was last seen alive on March 9.

Thakkar was studying accounting at the Sydney College of Business and IT, which collaborates with Southern Cross University, and was a permanent resident of Australia.
Friends and family of Thakkar told media that they had no idea why she was killed.

The body of Thakkar was stuffed into a suitcase which construction workers spotted in a canal near Meadowbank Park as they were doing maintenance on an oil pipeline.

Police has arrested 19-year-old Daniel Stani-Reginald in connection with the murder and the accused was questioned by detectives and charged with murder and aggravated sexual assault.

Accused Stani-Reginald, who lived close to Thakkar in Croydon, was arrested at an Ashfield motel on weekend and appeared via video link in Parramatta Local Court yesterday, according to the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper.

The court refused to grant him bail.
The accused glanced at the Indian students who poured into the court in their dozens, filling the chairs and every centimetre of floor space, and then bowed his head for the duration of the hearing.

Charged with aggravated sexual assault and murder, he did not apply for bail and it was formally refused, with the matter adjourned to Burwood Local Court today.
Outside the court, the students held up a poster that read "We want justice for our Indian international friend Tosha Thakkar".

Anish Popli, the husband of Thakkar's first cousin, said nobody had cause to attack her.
"She wouldn't hurt or harm anybody. She had been living in Australia for three or four years and did not fit the profile of a fresh-faced arrival vulnerable to attack.

"It's not like she's never been here - she knew her way around," he said.
Southern Cross University extended its condolences to Thakkar's family, friends and colleagues, a spokeswoman said yesterday.

The university is providing counselling and support services to students and staff.

No country is deprived of any crime be it Australia or our country India. As an individual, we all have our likes and rights to chose where we want to grow and live, but its a fact that with all the positives and negatives our country INDIA is the best and will always be...in all aspects.

Cheryl, I support your comments all the way. Wish all Indians thought that way. If they did India would be shining more than it should. As I said before Indians have a huge complex problem. Rather than seeing the betterment of the country like many nationals do, Indians condemn and move away and make the country look like shits. A sad phenomenon.
Indians have become cheap in terms of respecting the country. People around the world look down on Indians because they condemn their own country even after moving away. Do they justify their move? Or put in public their dirty linen . Indians have lost respect around the world by portraying and making India look bad.

I am not against anyone studying abroad after all its ones own likes and dislikes. All I am asking the younger generation is if you have learnt something good come back and teach the future generation. This way your helping in building a better India and one day they will be no need for anyone to go abroad and learn when its available in ones own country.

If one has noticed its usually the youngsters who are moving from India. Why are you so ashamed of your own country? Why not take lead to change the way people look at India and discriminate it and moreover its mostly the NRI's who look down upon India.

I have come across so many individuals who look down upon India and the culture they are born with as if India is some piece of crap.

In my own community people are ashamed to speak their mother tongue 'Konkani'. Even here in mangalore parents are not encouraging their kids to learn the language and converse in it. I have seen so many of my friends, relatives, family members where they dont encourage the child to learn the mother tongue. They proudly say my child does not know konkani.

What a shame and feel sad for their parents. Youngsters wake up and take charge to improve in a small manner maybe you cant do much but a single step taken in the right direction will help as the saying goes "little s of water make a mighty ocean".

Lets share what we learn this is what education is all about.

I end by quoting "Be the change that you wish to see".

Dear Alpha, India, First of all if I have a NRI status as my work calls me to be there, If I definitely had a equivalent paying job in India I would have worked back in India but for your kind information all my hard earned money comes back to India so tell me who is benefited by that, please go through my comment once more if you have failed to grasp what I have been trying to express! It was not to condemn others but to tell my own opinion which has formed not just being in India but travelling all over the world, I can give you a good example during 1990-1991 I was in South Africa when the ANC was coming into power and since Durban has quite many probably 4 or 5th generation 'Indians' who were basically afraid of blacks as they were not very fond of ‘Indians’ as most of the ‘Indians’ are hard working and are either in middle management in general or in business and lived a comfortable life which was not seen as equivalent to blacks who were lazy at work and were mostly laborers and living in poverty! There were incidents when blacks had forcefully evicted ‘Indians’ and taken over their residence and this has happened in the ‘Indian’ townships such as Chatsworth and Phoenix! And to remind all Indians We were the first to apply sanctions on South Africa due to apartheid policy and now our own 4th/5th generation ‘Indians’ were on the verge of being literally being kicked out from that country,

I had met so many ‘Indians’ who were asking me all about how to come back and resettle in India……so by this my experience..and then when some one says “ We are doing this for our children” it just puts a very big question mark to what I have seen and experienced! My advice to all the Indians who have migrated, please integrate and assimilate totally with migrated country and never try to make “little India’s” all over the place or else one day or the other you will be targeted, you shall know that by history…….anyway this is only my opinion!

We should be consoling the parents of the poor girl and not putting them down. Every person has a right to study/ live wherever they feel is good for them. If India was such a great place to live in then no one would want to migrate. People from England, USA, France, etc. also migrate to other countries. With most people it seems to be a case of sour grapes.
I wish you all would strongly voice your opinion when a girl gets raped in India.

At the outset I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the members of the deceased family, I pray that God give you the strength to bear this irreparable loss.

When Daniel Reginald was arrested for the murder of Tosha Thakkar the Australian newspapers also revealed that her alleged killer was a Tamil of Sri Lankan decent. But call it coincidence most Indian newspapers and reporting agencies have not reported this fact that has led to suggestions from your readers that the attack was on grounds of race, religion, and colour discrimination etc.

The Indian Diaspora is spread all over the world and their numbers run into the millions. A majority of immigrants to the West are professionals or businessmen. A good number of the people who go to the ME are casual labourers, artisans or domestic help many of them make the supreme sacrifice of living alone without their families for years.

So here is the question for those who find immigration objectionable. Why would anyone want to leave if they are doing well and their families are being looked after? If anyone is comfortably settled in the land of their birth and/or face no discrimination in any way shape or form why would anyone ever think of leaving their hometowns to find work in other parts of the country or overseas? ???

unless graduate or professional you will not get better job in India so most non graduate / semiprofessional end up in gulf then on to western countries. Secondly you will not get seats in recognized university in India when you don’t score 90plus but western universities give admission. But coming to the point of murder that should not have happened.

It is nice to sit on the other side of the fence and comment about children going to the west to pursue higher education. Agreed, we have the best universities in the world but do we have the best systems? My child too studies in the West but does any one under stand the compulsions why students prefer going to the west?
Graduate students after passing out from Indian Universities aspire to do MBA or MS.
They are made to compete with SC/ST students who’s cut off scores are almost half of a normal category student. In spite of low cut off’s, seats are reserved for SC/ST and cutoffs are further lowered to accommodate them.
After passing out from these institutes the child has to further fight for jobs with SC/ST candidates and to add insult to injury SC/ST employees now want assured promotions.
Now tell me which intelligent student will bother to study in India?
India is the only country in the world where people fight to be backward.
If this continues one fine day India will have only SC/ST.

Australian cities are far more safer to live than any Indian cities including Mangalore. Goan/Mangaloreans immigrants are well integrated in Australian mainstream and find no discrimination whatsoever. Those Indians who can not integrate should stop complaining and go back to their roots.

By the way the article is about an Indian student raped and murdered in Australia and nothing to do with where Indians live? People from every country move and migrate to other countries and no one can stop it. It is nothing to do with patriotism but the right opportunity.

Rape and murder of young girls happens all over the world. Here it happened to be an Indian girl. Look in India, how many are killed this way daily?? It is unfortunate this girl might have been at the wrong place at the wrong time. They have caught the culprit and I am sure he will be punished severely. The law is tough in Australia unlike in India where even the courts can be bought over easily. May her soul rest in Peace.

Cheryl, Mangalore, Indeed we fail to understand as to why our Indians are so obsessed with western education. Is it not just due to human desire for a better future with some comforts.
Just observe educational institutes run by all religious groups (not just missionaries), from Kinder Garten children are taught and forced to imitate the West. There are practically no private Institutions that dont follow Western Suit and tie as if we don't have any value in Indian dress. Even when it is unbearably hot, our men suffer with black suit and a strangling tie. Look at our girls and ladies how they are encouraged to imitate the West practically with no clothes on.

Not just the Western accent and life style, we have ruined even the morality by blindly imitating the West. The change can begin only from women, not a life style imposed by men. Are you ready for the challenge?

I second comments from Cheryl/Mangalore, Persons going for a better prospect to work in foreign countries is acceptable but permanently settling over there is different altogether, more over even in India (Mangalore in particular) there are many families who speak broken Kinglish (Kannada/Konkani at home) probably it make them look more “sophisticated”, In my own experience I have seen many who have studied in the colloquial medium have and are faring much better! And also I heard many parents comment about immigrating saying “we are doing this for our children”!! does this mean children who study in India do not have any future!! Is it just because someone speaks English with an Canadian/American/Australian/British accent is respected.
Recently while travelling from Mangalore I had this very funny experience with a couple who were showing off their Phoren acquired status they were having a loud argument with Indian Airlines counter staff who was politely telling them they an excess baggage of 40 Kgs between them (after she had given them generous allowance) either to pay or off load, then suddenly without warning all the true Indian mannerisms of this “Gentle Pseudo Foreigners” burst forth!! To wrap it up, when I was young I just hated India that was until I travelled out of India and visited various countries, yes so many of them are much better ours, but then we are Indians and we shall be one so until we die so better to be a first class citizen in ours then second class elsewhere! We individually have the responsibility towards our country, as when we work we do it for our own family we shall not go and look after our neighbors house or beautify it, same way we have to improve our own standards by being more honest, disciplined and hard working , which automatically will improve the living environment around us.

A very good question posed by Mr. Vinayak Shenoy. The answer is simple and universally known.. we are discriminated, punched, kicked, beaten, raped and downgraded all over the world, only because the whole world knows how gutless our government and politicians are. They would never get away with anything if it is an American citizen. But with an Indian they would get away with murder, and our politicians would still stand around bickering. Shame on us. If your honestly a true citizen of India learn to stay where your original roots are rather than blindly looking at the west thats one of the main reasons india has not prospered cause our own citizens settle in other countries thus failing to improvise ones own mother land. Moreover the parents do not encourage their kids to know their origin and blindly let their children copy the westerners accent and life style.
