Bengaluru, Jul 25: The price of banana has shot up in the state as Shravan month is round the corner. This month is full of festivals. Banana is used in many pooja rituals as well as for consumption by those who are on fasting and other self-imposed diet.
One of the reason for the high price is the low quantity of plantain that is grown by the farmers. The plantain farmers suffered huge losses during Covid and did not get the price for their crop last year. So many have opted out of the crop. As the supply is less and demand is more, the price has gone up.
Last month, the price of Cardamom (Elakki) variety of banana was hovering around Rs 50 to 55 per kg. However, with the arrival of Shravan month, the price has touched Rs 100 per kg. In addition, the price of plantain leaf has gone up by Rs 10 to 15.
Due to heavy rains also the yield of plantain crop is very low. Earlier one bunch of banana used to weigh 20 kilos. Now it has come down to 10 kilos. But the cost of manure and other essential for its growth are the same.
The prices of vegetables, especially the leafy ones has come down considerably. The price of tomato, which was at around Rs 100 per kg has hit rock bottom with just Rs 20 per kg now. Onion is costing Rs 33 to Rs 35 per kg, beans Rs 40 per kg, beetroot Rs 46 per kg, radish Rs 29 per kg and drumstick Rs 44 per kg.
