Mangalore: MVST Seminar on ‘E-library – Gateway of Knowledge’

Mangalore, Apr 4: Dr M V Shetty Institute of Technology here, in association with the department of library and information centre, had organized a seminar on ‘E-library: A Gateway of Knowledge’, on Saturday April 2.

Delivering the keynote address at the seminar after inaugurating it, Dr Mahesh Mudhol, professor in the department of library and information science at Mangalore University, noted that broadly speaking, internet itself is a digital library. While noting that e-learning, e-publishing, e-banking, e-commerce, e-governance etc, are in vogue at present, he asked the concerned to accept new technologies without ignoring traditional values.

Dr M K Bhandi, professor and university librarian of Mangalore University, participated as the chief guest. He noted that library happens to be a laboratory of an institution, and that it is necessary for the faculty members to have in-depth knowledge in the subjects to be able to have sway on the students. While suggesting that the university library’s e-resources can be accessed through collaboration, he highlighted the importance of accessing e-books, e-journals, e-databases etc through internet. Noting that in the past, people had to move about a lot to get books and read them, he said knowledge is now available at the fingertips. He suggested to the educational institutions to get equipped with latest technological gadgets for helping the faculty as well as the students to access e-library resources.



Dr Divyanjali Shetty, trustee and governing council member of Dr M V Shetty Education Trust ®, who participated as the guest of honour, said that in this digital era, information is available on the internet, CDs and desktops. She wanted the faculty members and the students to make effective use of these equipments to enrich their knowledge.

Secretary and chairman of the governing council of the said trust, Dr M Ramagopal Shetty, presided over the programme. Speaking to the gathering, he exhorted them to be guided by various suggestions given by the speakers. He too advised the faculty and students to make best use of available resources.

Principal and director of the seminar, Dr Sandeep J Nayak, highlighted the importance of e-library, consortia approach, and virtual library, besides urging the faculty and students to make use of them.

Vanaja, librarian of the university college in the city, was present.

Sankappa Rai B, librarian and seminar coordinator, welcomed. Head of the department of electrical and electronics engineering, Vinod Kumar, and Mamatha, head of the department of information science, introduced the guests. Sashma, lecturer in the department of mathematics, proposed vote of thanks. Shruthi Aureyl and Telma compered the programme.
