Karnataka Recreating its own 'Goa Beach'

Karnataka Recreating its own 'Goa Beach'

By Mayabhushan Nagvenkar - IANS

Panaji, April 13 :
Nearly 300 km from Goa's southernmost beach of Agonda, Karnataka is in the process of recreating a ''Goa beach'' of its own.

The difference, according to officials, is that Karnataka's sun-sand adaptation would be a safer place, well-planned, organised and remarkably sanitised as compared to the beaches of Goa, which are slipping into decadence owing to years of neglect.

The Karanataka government is expecting the Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project to change the face of beach tourism in the state, which is otherwise known for its rich heritage and sandalwood - and, in recent times, rampant mining.

"Safety and security of tourists are prime on our agenda. We have well trained lifeguards - trained by Surf Life Australia. Through strict vigilance we have been able to clear the beach of all anti-social elements," Yathish Baikampady, the project's chief executive officer, told IANS.

"Today we have graduated into total beach management. We are perhaps the only organisation in India that has experience in total beach management, right from safety, security, environment protection, beach upkeep and maintenance, beach vendor management, water sports and everything connected to the beach," Baikampady claimed.

Sanitation has top billing on the agenda, he stressed.

According to him, "even the ice gola (crushed ice on a stick dipped in flavoured syrup) served here is made from zero-bacteria cube ice and it has been a trade mark of the beach".

Tourists at the Panambur beach are not even allowed to use the chewing paan, a tradition in parts of Karnataka.

What is it that made Panambur follow the Goa model?

Baikampady said: "Goa has its own unique brand image. If the beaches in Karnataka develop a certain level of tourism friendliness and tourism related facilities, both the regions may prosper."

The relatively cosmopolitan crowd from Mangalore, around 300 km from here, continues to be one of the main tourism sources for the Panambur beach.

Beach weddings, family and corporate events are next on the agenda for the beach resort.

"We are committed to maintaining the cosmopolitan culture Mangalore has to offer.

Today a boy and a girl can come to the beach and enjoy the sunset in each other's company undisturbed. Voyeurism is snuffed in the bud. Anyone taking pictures discreetly of others without consent is reprimanded and pictures removed from their camera," he said.

For the young high spending professionals and students from Bangalore and other regions of Karnataka who usually head to the Goa beaches, Panambur could offer a new option closer home.

What is the connection between tourism and BAJARANG DAL? Why BD is pulled into every thing? Only narrow minded fundamentalist can connect tourism with BD.Mangalore should be a better alternative to goa. One goa for India is enough.

Today if you go to any beach in mangalore , you have to be careful about the moral police (BD/RS police) even if you go with your wife or daughter.
No foreigner will come to the beach just to sit in the sand and to swim you will have to wear swimwear. I do not know how this will go down with the hypocrites in mangalore.

Just building shacks and organizing a few speed boats Mangalore does not become GOA.
    Where is the infrastructure?
For a Global Holiday destination we need a Big International Airport, wide open roads, 24 hour electricity, Clean drinking water, Hospitality, Sanitation, Beaches free of human excreta, Cheap Liquor and Warm courteous English speaking people.
We have none of the above but we have BD who are capable of transforming Mangalore to Qandahar.

As far as comparing Goa with Mangalore i think it is wishful thinking! Simply having a clean beach with a few facilities or activities does not make the place like GOA. For tourism in any state to prevail, you have to make the factors of tourism conducive to that destination. Goa has better infrastructure than Mang. The roads are better, electricity, and water supply are continuous the local people themselves are 'tourism friendly' unlike in mangalore.

For eg. If a western tourist wants to dine on 'Beef Steak' he should not go to Kasaragod in Kerala to have it. If a tourist wants to have a few drinks late in the night sitting at a beachside shack/cafe, he should be able to do so without any fear from the local population who might be on the prowl for moral policing. The goan churches, temples, and mosques are left intact and not desecrated by religious fundamentalists. Most of the people who rape and commit crime in Goa are outsiders from other parts of india (Goans call them "Ghattis"). Goans themselves, are peace loving, happy go lucky people (irrespective of their religion). Can mangies call themselves that?? I DON"T THINK SO..

This sounds like a joke or a wishful thinking. Mangalore may develop its own beach resort but dont compare or say it will be an alternate to Goa. Goa is a tourist friendly state. It's beaches may be neglected over the years but the people of Goa are a sober people, proud of their tolerance for all religions and all people of the world. It has a Government that believes and practices religious freedom and tolerance. Can you say the same with Mangalore? People here take law into their own hands, there is religious policing by "groups" while the state machinery looks the other way, the Government is hand in glove with these groups and wants people to live in terror and at the mercy of these groups. Do you expect tourists and visitors who spend a lot of money for their leisure to get some peace and calm come to Mangalore? Man, you must be kidding!

What if Bajrangis / SRS slap couples (like how they did in mangalore pub attacks) for holding each others hands on the beach?

Bajrangis can always say, holding each others hands is not Indian culture, and is morally corrupt Christian culture. What to do then? Will life guard come to the rescue?

The whole idea sounds pretty good! The modernised beach will ideally suit especially the Mangalore climate, which is tropical, humid and hot during most part of the year, and the beach lovers will simply love it. Presently the city of Mangalore lacks clean and nice swimming pools where the children (and the grown ups as well) enjoy a swim at moderate cost, and it will be a great opportunity for them to enjoy sea and the nature in a cleaned environment. The new project will also create many new jobs in the area which Mangalore needs badly. This will, though, add still more values to the closeby real estate properties in Mangalore, which, by the way, have already gone through the roof. It will also invariably add to the congestion and more pollution.

Good planning. I am happy for the good sanitizing agenda!! But danger is, moral policing! They will extract the tourist friendly nature in no time!! They will keep harassing a man and woman spotted together....Married couple, brother & sisters or a youth with fiancée… nobody will be spared!! Police and politicians should not encourage such activities of goons!! Mother Nature is kind to coastal Karnataka. But we have different kind of political and selfish problems of BD and SRS!! If tourists are protected from Moral polices…there is no doubt about the success of tourism in Coastal Karnataka!

Our Region is embedded between two most successful tourist destinations of India, i.e., Kerala and Goa It is said that, Tourism often brings increased levels of crime, prostitution and drug use into local communities and effects the manipulation of their cultural traditions.
The growth of tourism in Goa has led to destruction of traditional occupations and the environment. Resource allocation has become skewed in favor of the tourism industry and land alienation is a serious concern. According to a recent news report Prostitution is on the increase in Kerala too, due to the Tourism.
Keeping in mind the above experiences in Kerala and Goa, Coastal Districts of Karnataka should be careful not repeat the same errors. The State has to find sustainable model of development in Cultural Tourism.
According to UNESCO Cultural heritage not only generates income, but also builds social cohesion, mobilizing communities around its care and management. Cultural festivals enhance dialogue.
