Scotland, Sep 10: Konkans living in Aberdeen celebrated ‘Monthi Fest’ on September 7 at St Francis of Assisi Church, Aberdeen.
Canon Peter Barry celebrated the festal mass. Juliana D’Costa welcomed the congregation to the mass and highlighted the importance of this celebration. The choir was organised by Alwyn Baretto and led by Emilda Baretto, who sang melodious Konkani hymns during the mass. The music for the choir was performed by Prakash, Ally and Nilesh.
After mass, the congregation proceeded to the hall in procession singing ‘Sakod sangatha melyan’.
Canon Barry blessed the new corn and the children showered flowers.
Prakash Benis welcomed the gathering in the hall, highlighting the importance of honouring mother Mary, mother nature and celebrating the occasion together as a family feast.
Marceline, the oldest mother amongst the audience, Pearl, the mother of the youngest child and Celine and Shalini, mothers of the highest number of children cut the cake, whilst everyone sang happy birthday to mama Mary.
Dr Maxim D’Costa compered the event and conducted the auction of his organic homegrown vegetables which raised Rs 1,20 000 for charity.
Riva and Calvin Benis, and Tanish and Riyansh Kirodian presented a wonderful Bollywood dance organised by Janet Benis and Dr Naveen Kirodian. The choir members entertained the audience with Konkani songs.
All gathered, enjoyed a delicious home cooked vegetarian meal which included delicacies such as Pothrade and ‘vorn’.
Everyone enjoyed the game of housie-housie which generated further funds to charity.
