Bangalore: Citizens Ask Hegde Not to Quit

Hegde Decision Saturday, Bangaloreans say 'Don't Quit'

Bangalore, Apr 22 (IANS): Scores of people, including leaders of Congress and Janata Dal-Secular, Friday pleaded with Karnataka Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde not to quit the Lokpal Bill drafting panel over Congress leader Digvijay Singh's attack on him.

"I think he should continue in the panel," leader of opposition in the assembly Siddaramiah of Congress told reporters here on Hegde's plan to quit in view of "malicious vilification campaign" against civil society members of the panel.

"You should not get disheartened by these attacks and should not quit the panel for any reason," JD-S state president and former Karnataka chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy pleaded while talking to reporters here.

Hegde also came under pressure from the public to stay on in the panel, which is mandated to draft the Lokpal bill aimed at curbing corruption at the national level.

Hegde told reporters that he would announce his decision in New Delhi Saturday after talking to other civil society members on the panel, which also has five central ministers.

Carrying placards reading "We are with you", "Please do not quit the panel", and "India against corruption", around 100 people, many of them senior citizens, met Hegde at his residence in upscale Sadashivanagar locality in north Bangalore to express support for him.

Hegde, a retired judge of the Supreme Court, told them that he would not act in haste and only announce his decision Saturday.

Besides Hegde, the other four members are Gandhian Anna Hazare, social activist Arvind Kejrival and leading lawyers Shanti Bhushan and his son Prashant Bhushan.

The group members told reporters that Hegde had informed them he had not taken any decision and would consult other civil society members on the panel before finalizing his stand.

The Bhushans are caught in a CD controversy and also over alleged preferential land allotment to them in Uttar Pradesh.

Hegde said Thursday he was thinking of quitting the panel, upset at the "malicious vilification campaign" against him.

Digvijay Singh, a former Madhya Pradesh chief minister and now a Congress general secretary, Thursday questioned what Hegde had done to curb corruption in Karnataka.

This is the second time in a month that Hegde has come under attack from senior Congress leaders.

Central Law Minister M. Veerappa Moily had said March 19 that Hegde "starts a probe but does not complete it" and that "his actions against corruption are superficial".

The next day an angry Hegde ticked him off saying "I don't need a certificate from Veerappa Moily. It is enough if I get a certificate from the people of Karnataka".

Like Digvijay Singh "clarifying" his remarks, Moily too had written a letter to Hegde hoping that media reports would not spoil their long and cordial relationship.

Did not mean any disrespect to Justice Hegde: Digvijay

Lucknow, Apr 22 (IANS): In a sudden move late Thursday evening, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Digvijay Singh expressed regret over his remarks about retired Supreme Court judge N. Santosh Hegde, a member of the Lokpal bill drafting committee.

Referring to his press conference earlier in the day when he nearly ran down Hegde, the Congress leader told mediapersons here in the evening: "I never meant any disrespect to Justice Hegde, who I hold in very high esteem."

Singh sought to clarify: "I was only trying to point out that Lokpal bill alone will not eradicate corruption from this country; in that context, while citing the example of Karnataka, I had said that even though we all acknowledge that the Karnataka Lok Ayukta Act was the most effective in the country and the office was held by a powerful judge like Justice Hegde, still there was unabated corruption in the state run by Yeddyurappa and the Reddys."

He was referring to the allegations of land scam against Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and of illegal mining against the powerful Reddy brothers of Bellary, who are ministers.

Hope Digvijay Singh's clarification pacifies Hegde. It is not important who says what, and how many hindrances one has to face, end results are important - which as I said earlier, will happen only after it gets its share of beatings. Panel is set and that is it. Hegde don't quit till such time atleast a skeleton bill is ready.
For all the onslaught you will have to face, ask them to speak their mind and assure that theirs wil be taken-up for discussion. Who knows! Just the way we plead Shanidev and the apeals are granted knowingly or unknowingly the bad and the croocked will also contribute to the cause at hand.

Mr. Hegde, one or two corrupt people may discourage you. But, think of the whole nation. Do not run away from your responsibilities. The nation needs you. Though Mr. Moily's statement may hurt you, one way he is right. You started great job against corrupt BJP in Karnataka, but, could not accomplish it. Please do not succumb to any pressure tactics from political parties and unmask the guilty boldly. We have great hope in you Mr. Hegde.

Dear friends, answear my simple question. How a lawer is famous.?
Ok. Correct me if i am wrong.
A lawer is always commercial. He works for money. He is famous because he can prove a 'wrong' to 'right' & vise versa. All this he does for monetory gain. No public service please.
Whether it is Shanti Bhushan, Prashant Bhushan or Ram Jethmalani: You can not give them credit or respect them for their knowledge.!!!!
    Particularly in such cases like
    Lokpal Bill.
    Please understand my point.
Mr.Hegde, the people of India needs you. Thank you.

    Dear Sir,
I fully agree with Mr. Digvijay Singh.
Yeddurappa’s case is almost closed as he himself has publicly admitted his guilt.
Reddys’s have been implicated by many investigation agencies including (SC) for illegal mining.
Rs.150 billion mining loot is much higher than all the scams put together.
Why are you taking so much time to complete your investigation?
Are you under pressure from some politician’s to go slow?
I suggest you should nail these corrupt politicians first and then move over.

Mr. Politician Digvijay Singh, please spare those few rarely availably honest officials or they too will go extinct. For your survival, please don't take mileage out of anything and everything.
Without much power in the state Lokayukta law, still Sri Santosh Hegde was trying his level best to check the monstrous corruption in our state for that we should applaud him.
Let the big sharks like Bushans, who knows the entire loop holes of all types of corruptions draft the Lokpal Bill because only diamond cut diamond. If we have a fool proof Lokpal Law than it will strengthen all state Lokayukta laws as well and in turn it will have more power to act on the state’s corrupt politicians, the beaurocrats and the Govt officials in collaboration with the dirty business cartels.
Honorable Sanjoshji, ignore the loose talks of those politicians and strengthen this historical Lokpal Law. Jai Hind!

Satish Rao Why you ar blaming Congress ? BJP is not allowing Hegde to take action against CM Yeddy for the Land Scams and Reddy Bros for Mining Scams. You people know only to blame Congress even if a PIN falls. That is why Hegde wants to quit. BJP is a fully CORRUPTED Government in Karnataka. High Command, Low Command is CM.

    Justice Hegde:

Congress or BJP, for that any political Party, you know they are not clean at all. You have taken a good step to fight corruption and clean up the dirty senario that we are suffering from. Please do not back out and show that you are weak.

Your sensitive nature was your strength to build yourself a clean person. Please do not succumb to political vendetta and contribute to the "silence of the good".

We sincerely hope that you will emerge as a good samaritan.

God bless you and your tribe.
