Mangalore, May 23: Unknown thieves gained entry into an apartment located on the ninth floor of His Grace apartment at Hat Hill near Lalbagh in the city and decamped with gold ornaments worth about Rs 5 lac.

Kumar Shenoy, working as manager in the city-based Infosys Technologies, who resides in apartment No. S-92 in the said residential complex, was away with his family on a two-day excursion when the incident happened. He returned to his home on the night of Sunday May 22, and found to his dismay that the thieves had cut open the glass of a window in his apartment, entered it, and had taken away about 32.5 sovereigns of gold ornaments worth around five lac rupees.

The timing of the theft is not clear, as no one was aware of the theft till the family returned home and found out what had happened.

What baffled the policemen and media persons alike, is the occurrence of theft at this high rise apartment in spite of the presence of tight security at the ground floor, where the entry of people and vehicles are meticulously recorded.

Urwa police station personnel visited the spot and conducted inspection. They have registered a case and begun investigation.

    I totally agree with Charles Dmello's statement: Hi security a natak!!So much for this high security area. I am witness to an incident in a big city mall where some security guards, forget kannada and tulu, could not even speak or understand Hindi!! God knows from where they were imported. The so called guards are just given some uniform and made to stand there like manequins. BTW, how much is the salary of these hitech security guards who are supposed to guard the rich people's property residing in these buildings, Rs 3000 pm?

    Nothing is safe any longer. I too have lost my gold - my sweat and my mothers sweat - gold lost due to a income tax raid at my husband's sister's house. Did not get a locker and husband advised to keep the gold there. 17 longs years and these eyes of mine still ache to have a look at my gold. A pain deep down with which I will close my eyes with.

    To Ashok, India and Suresh Mangalore

    Dear Brothers of my own beloved Country - Let you both not forget that I had a pity feeling too over the incident and on Mr Shenoy..why we need to raise NRI's matter here..SIRS, though I work as a NRI, I never had a single thought on a single day even that I am rich and my fellow country man who resides in my own Country is poor. Let me or anyone not have feeling that you guys are pulling our legs. This is not the time to role on an idiotic arguement. Let now the police department do their level best try and put the culprit behind the bars but beleive me still another 2 more robbers will be increased the day next morning. What to say I love my own Mangalore by means whatever happens. I think the issue is clear.

    @Lancy and Jaimini,
    It is pretty easy to comment sitting at ur comfort at home.
    fyi, 5 lac worth of jewelery is not much weight these days thanks to the skyrocketing gold prices.
    I agree he could have kept it in SDLs but may have overlooked since it was a short 2-day trip and paid for the mistake.
    It is wedding season in India and they may have kept it at home in handy till the season is over to avoid frequent locker operations.
    Looks like an known hand who knew there was jewelery at home and the occupants out of town.

    Both Lancy moras & Jaimini Don't think that only NRI's are rich & back home in India poor man is living. Nowaydays India also rich & the salary they get is HUGE. people in India they buy property & gold more than the NRI's. Keeping gold at home is usual. It depends on how much you afford. People buy things for their wife & family not to keep it in the bank. BUT it is major prtoblem is the Police & the security gaurds. It is nearly imposible for an outsider to know who is out of station & to enter the building of high security. Its failure of Police & the security gaurds. Police has to become more effecient in Mangalore. It is an big city

    A brain note to SI of Urwa police station. Would you please ask Mr. Kumar Shenoy, why he could leave or hide Godl ornaments worth 5 lac at his dwelling resident and vanish for an excursion when there are so many latest bank SDL's available ? looks so stupid issue to me as I am a regular reader of daijiworld news. No need to mention that I have a pity feeling too whatever had happened to him.
