Mangaluru: Desi extravaganza 'Milan' celebrated grandly at St Joseph Engineering College

Mangaluru, Dec 17: St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), hosted Milan 2022, a desi extravaganza on campus, with great fervour on December 16. The inhabitants of the college campus were welcomed with a colourful artworks designed by the student contingent at the entrance and around the campus of the college.

The management, faculty, staff and students of SJEC gathered at 9:15 AM for a brief inauguration along with the procession including punjabi dhol. The lighting of the lamp was followed by inaugural function, speech by principal and later the students began the excitement with the flash mob and games for staff and students. The punjabi dhol performance further grabbed the attention of the crowd to the venue with students dancing to the beats of the dhol expressing their interest to the celebration around.

Dr Rio D'Souza explained the real essence of the cultural confluence, Milan 2022, the significance of diversity, love and compassion being the common thread that binds different communities together, the human qualities which brings us together so that diversity becomes the element to combine unique strength of individuals to bring everyone together on a single platform and celebrate this wonderful occasion.

This was followed by a variety of events that included Ujwal, Chitrakala, Rang Tarang, Aahar, Shutter Up, Reel-in Milan, Ethnic Fiesta and Navarathna.

In the evening, Milan 2022 was organized at the basketball court of the college in the presence of the dignitaries that included Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, director of SJEC, Fr Alwyn Richard D’Souza, assistant director of SJEC, Dr Rio D’Souza, principal of SJEC, Dr Purushotham Chippar, vice principal of SJEC and Rakesh Lobo, HR Manager of SJEC. The colourful dresses celebrating the ethnic diversity of the SJEC campus, music and dances all added up to the wonderful and energetic performances of the participants. The talent of SJEC students was on display and the event symbolized the rich cultural heritage and traditions.

Aren Joy Fernandes, a final year student of SJEC studying Electronics and Communication engineering was felicitated for his achievement at international platform for represented India in Asian Junior Powerlifting Championship held in Dubai, UAE from November 27 to December 8. He secured gold medal in below 74 Kg category powerlifting championship by lifting squat 240 kg with bronze medal in squat, bench press 145 Kg deadlift 309 kg with gold medal and created a new world record in his name. Overall he secured the gold medal with a total lifting weight of 694 Kg. He is also been honoured with the title best lifter junior men 2022. The prizes for the winners of various competitions was also given on this occasion.

The other key highlight of the day was the grand procession in the evening performed with the Nasik band along with the students of the college. The special attractions of the evening included Nasik Band and DJ. The event was coordinated by Rachana Crasta and Prasad S M along with the rest of the members of the organizing team.
