US decries 'targeted' attacks and 'home demolitions' in India

By Yashwant Raj

Washington, May 16 (IANS) The US State Department on Monday noted "targeted attacks" on minorities, "home demolitions" and hate speeches against Muslims in India among threats facing religious freedom around the world.

The State Department outlined in great detail "numerous reports during the year of violence by law enforcement authorities against members of religious minorities in multiple states" in India in its 2022 annual report on the state of freedom of religion around the world.

The report was released by Secretary of State Antony Blinken who noted both progress and "continuation, and in some instances, the rise of very troubling trends".

Previewing the report earlier, a senior State Department official told reporters that regarding India the document outlined "continued targeted attacks against religious communities, including Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Hindu Dalits, and indigenous communities; dehumanizing rhetoric, including open calls for genocide against Muslims; lynching and other hate-fueled violence, attacks on houses of worship and home demolitions, and in some cases impunity and even clemency for those who've engaged in attacks on religious minorities - we're also continuing to see, at the state level, some restrictions on religious attire".

Rashad Hussain, the Ambassador at Large at the State Department for International Religious Freedom, cited the Hardwar speeches of December 2021 as particularly problematic.

"In India, legal advocates and faith leaders from across the country's diverse religious communities condemned a case of extreme hate speech against Muslims in the city of Hardwar, calling for the country to uphold its historical traditions of pluralism and tolerance," he said at the release of the report.

He was referring to a three-day meeting called the Dharma Sansad in December 2021, where speakers called for people to take up arms against Muslims.

A case was registered by the Uttarakhand police against the organiser. The other countries mentioned by Hussain were Russia, China, Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia.

The State Department's annual report has been critical of the state of religious freedom in India before, and, based on local news reports and accounts from civil society, it has listed instances and cases over the years.

India has rejected these unsolicited observations and remarks before and in recent years questioned America's right to stand in judgment on other countries.

The US Commission on International Freedom have been far more critical of India and has recommended to the State Department to designate India as a "country of particular concerns" four times. But the State Department has not taken up its suggestion yet. These designations are to be announced later in the year.

Worlds biggest democracy is lined with Russia,China,Afghanistan , Pakistan and Myanmar since BJP has come to power. Courts are controlled by BJP only recently SC has woken up. People are found guilty before they are allowed to prove their innocence. If people don’t wake up and get rid of this party and their government time might come sanctions might be imposed on us leading to further difficulties to all Indians both at home and abroad.

This would not have happened if the supreme courts had taken a stand. You cannot destroy someone's property for his actions. The property/house might belong to his father. mother or wife which was built with their hard earned money and agar beta nalayak nikla toh will the governments bulldoze the house? This is so wrong and not justified. If that is how it works, then demolish every criminal's house. Why don't the bulldozers work on the houses of politicians and corrupt government officials? Why not on the houses of rapists and thieves? Law should be equal to all. Selective destruction based on religion lead to this and in future it is going to hurt the country's image badly. Already we are in doldrums in the ratings pertaining to religious freedom, press freedom, happiness index and many more.

If you want to reduce crime in UP which is a state for high criminal activity, then you need to take tough decisions like these so that criminals think about their family and house before committing crime. This is a good model to keep criminals under check, but it shouldn't be biased and one sided like it is happening in UP..If it is being done equally to reduce crime, without favouring any community, then its a good approach to counter criminals.

@AJ Mangalore, Tell me first thing...who decides a person is a criminal or not? It is the courts and law enforcement right? So until the person is labelled a criminal you want the courts and to bulldoze his house you don't need courts? Your comment in itself is nullified. In such a case why have police, law enforcement and judiciary. Scrap them all and make it banana republic. You are the same people who hail this kind of activity and decry about Taliban. If bulldozing or kangaroo courts are justified by you then there is no difference between taliban and the Indian government. Get well soon.

If that is so then it should come from law and applied to all. Can you control crime like this? Absolutely no. You make anyone poor their struggle to survive becomes harder and in such situations crimes increase. Especially if someone's whole family suffers then it is not good at all. Use the provisions of law and punishment from the books of law.

Let USA take care of its own citizens rather than interfering with other countries. Blacks are lynched for silly reasons and mass shooting kills hundreds of innocents including school children. In India or UP in particular demolition of illegal houses are of only hard core criminals and they do not belong to any community. It is still possible for all communities to live harmoniously without any hatred with each other. After all this country , soil or property is not permanent for any person. Example is Ukrane.

If you don’t like US, then please tell your countrymen to return back to their country. In US people have the liberty to speak the mind but in your country anyone speaks against the government will have to face consequences if he/ stands his ground OR will be let off if he supports the government during probe.
