Darbhanga (Bihar), Jul 13: Police on Wednesday July 13 arrested BJP MP and former cricketer Kirti Azad in connection with the vandalising of Bihar state electricity board general manager's office back in 2001.
On June 24, a non-bailable warrant had been issued against him. On Wednesday, he was arrested while on his way to surrender in court.
He was, however, released on bail by first class magistrate Vijay Kumar Pandey. Kirti was asked to pay a sum of Rs 5,000 as bail amount and two sureties.
In 2001, Kirti allegedly led a large number of people in protest against the shortage of electricity in his constituency Darbhanga. He was accused of manhandling officials of the electricity board and ransacking the general manager's office.
When the non-bailable warrant was issued on June 24, Kirti had reportedly gone into a hiding, following which police raided his house and launched a search.
Kirti has been asked by the court to cooperate with the trial and appear whenever summoned.
