Mumbai, Aug 25: A delegation of leaders of the Republican Party of India (A) led by national president of the party Ramdas Athawale met the Governor K Sankaranarayanan at Raj Bhavan here on Wednesday August 24 and demanded reservation for weaker sections of society including SCs, STs, VJNT, and OBCs in the self-financed universities and deemed universities.
The delegation informed the Governor that the Self Financed Universities Bill passed by the state Legislative Assembly recently did not provide for constitutional safeguards to the weaker sections guaranteed by the Indian Constitution. Mentioning that the provisions of the Maharashtra Universities’ Act 1994 also did not reflect in the new Bill, the delegation demanded that self-financed universities, deemed universities, and unaided universities should ensure reservation in admissions and recruitment for the weaker sections of society.
The delegation also urged the decision-makers of the self-financed university including the governing body should have representation of SC, ST, VJNT and OBCs. The self-financed universities are brought under the control of the UGC and HRD ministry.
The Governor assured the delegation that he will discuss the issues raised by members of the delegation with the chief minister.
